Horace Langford Jr. / Pahrump Valley Times - The 18th annual Fiber Arts Show is on all weekend in the former location of the Skate Zone on Calvada Boulevard.

The time for getting out of the house and participating in local events has arrived with the warm weather.

This month and next are loaded with opportunities for art and education, a balloon expo, another fundrising Mardi Gras, a weekend of events for No to Abuse and a crab fest.

The art comes with the 18th annual Quilt &Fiber Arts Show set for Feb. 21-23, held this year in a new location. The building at 1261 E. Calvada Blvd., is the former location of Skate Zone. The Fiber Arts Show flyer indicated some concern over cigarette smoke so those in attendance and with products on display will be happy to know the new location is smoke-free.

Other than the quilts and other displays, there will be an opportunity to win the “Opportunity Quilt.”

There will be vendor booths, door prizes, something for the guys in the Man Cave and a silent auction.

Some quilts, say those handed down in the family or hand-stitched and quilted, can be worth quite a bit. There will be an appraiser on hand to tell you what yours is worth.

Other activities include a bed turning demonstration, other crafty demos and educational talks from the featured quilter Judy Toll.

Admission is $5 per day, $7 for a two-day pass and $10 for a three-day pass. Kids are free and husbands are free, too, as long as they bring a wife. The schedule is in a separate box on this page to help decide when to go.

After playing to a packed house over Valentine’s weekend, the Shadow Mountain Community Players are gearing up for the final performances of Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap.”

There are still tickets available for the weekend performances Feb. 21 and 22, at New Hope Fellowship auditorium, 781 West Street. The doors open at 6 p.m. for dinner, and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, and are available at the Pahrump Community Library, at the door or by calling 727-6145.

The Death Valley Chamber of Commerce will celebrate Mardi Gras with a fundraiser dinner. The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the Tecopa Community Center on Tecopa Road.

The dinner will feature “authentic Nawlins cuisine,” Bourbon Street jazz and raffles.

There will be an opportunity to purchase a chamber membership as well.

Tickets are limited and the price is $25 per person. The center is alcohol free. Call 888-600-1844 to reserve a seat.

Another three-day event is scheduled when the Pahrump Balloon Festival comes to town March 7-9.

The chamber-sponsored event will bring those huge, colorful balloons to town and offer tethered balloon rides, entertainment, vendors and food in Petrack Park.

Some colorful orbs will be set up in the Pahrump Nugget parking lot and fired up for an evening “Glow Show.” The event will be staged with music as well.

There will be numerous raffles and four tickets for balloon rides will be available.

Coming up March 15 will be the annual St. Patty’s Crab Fest benefiting the Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA is currently seeking sponsors for the event as well as selling tickets.

The chow down is set for 6 p.m. and tickets are $45 per person. They must be purchased in advance for accurate ordering of the Pacific Dungeness Crab. Call 513-9514 to make reservations.

Added to the event is a silent auction and a pick-a-prize raffle.

There are several levels of sponsorship available. Crab sponsors of $1,000 will have a front-row table for 10 reserved and have a banner. The business will also have its name mentioned in related publicity.

Chicken is also on the menu and an $800 sponsorship will have a table for eight, a large sign and be mentioned in publicity announcements.

With a meal comes salad, which will cost a sponsor $500 for a table for six, signage and publicity.

The deadline for sponsorship is March 7. CASA is also taking raffle prize donations.
