Four events at Ian Deutch Park set for April 19

Next Saturday is going to be a busy day at Ian Deutch Park with four events happening simultaneously in that location.

Normally, the annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by various organizations over the years, is held at Petrack Park. This year, not only the location has changed, but Earth Day will also be happening on the same day. Both are being held April 19 at Ian Deutch Memorial Park.

Added to the fun, New Hope Fellowship is sponsoring a group of skateboarders called “Skaters of Christ,” to put on a demonstration in the skatepark.

The Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by Pahrump Disability Outreach Program, will begin at 10 a.m. sharp and be divided into groups. Prizes will be awarded.

The children up to 3 years old and the physically disabled will have the first chance to gather the brightly-colored eggs. Group two will be for those children up to 7 years old and the last group will be for those from 8 to 12 years of age.

The NyE Communities Coalition Holiday Task Force will sponsor a picnic of hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, kettle corn and cotton candy. The grill will be manned by volunteers from Corrections Corporation of America. The picnic begins at 11 a.m.

Earth Day will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature environmentally-friendly demonstrations. There will also be an Adopt-a-Pet event taking place and this is the place to get involved in the Pahrump Town Clean-up.

Bring the kids, there will be a bounce house, face painting and a chance to pet a burro and ride the turtle train.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will be there teaching attendees about plants and giving the kids a chance to plant a flower or a vegetable.

Bins for recycling electronics and ink cartridges will be available.

The action at the skate park will be from noon to 3 p.m. There will be a skate contest and the Skaters of Christ will put on a demonstration at 1 p.m. There will be prizes and more.

The National Park Service will get in on next weekend’s action too by waiving entrance fees to Death Valley National Park and all National Park units April 19-20 to celebrate National Park Week.

National Park Week runs from April 19-27, 2014. As part of the week, the Death Valley National Park will promote junior ranger activities for National Junior Ranger Day on April 26th. Materials are available at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.

The wildflowers are out in force this year, despite a drought in the rest of California. In some areas of the park there is an abundance of wildflowers along the roads and are draping hillsides with color.

Or you can enjoy a day at the Mesquite Sand Dunes, wind your way through Golden Canyon, or stay cool with a visit to Scotty’s Castle. Stroll along the salt flats at Badwater or see the colorful display of minerals at Artist’s Palette. Temperatures are expected to be warm, so carry plenty of water and sunscreen, and plan outdoor activities for early in the day.

The Ms. Senior Nye County Pageant will take place at 3 p.m. April 12 in the Pahrump Nugget Events Center. Call 751-8795 or 764-0006 for tickets.

Saitta Trudeau Chrysler Jeep Dodge will be sponsoring a fundraiser car wash on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., to benefit the Pahrump Valley Youth Activities Association (PVYA).

PVYA takes care of kids 6 – 12 years of age during the summer with educational and recreational activities, and feeds them breakfast and lunch, for a very small fee.

The cost of the car wash is a donation of any amount of money.

The Pahrump Valley Museum will hold its monthly lecture series at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the museum. This month’s featured speaker is Tim Hafen. See the story on page 15.

The UNCE “Grow Your Own” class from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., next Thursday will cover tomato basics and “not so basics,” The class is $10 and those interested should call 727-5532 to register.
