Lecture, three fundraisers all happening this weekend

This will be a busy weekend with a lecture and three fundraisers all happening Saturday, Sept. 13.

The lecture at the museum will be presented by the Pahrump Valley Times sports writer Vern Hee, who will present an oral biography of veteran coach Rod Poteete. Poteete passed away earlier this year.

The lecture is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Pahrump Valley Museum, 401 E. Basin Ave.

As Poteete’s friend, Hee will share unseen photos and unheard stories that will shed light on Poteete’s personality from his career and his personal life. Admission is free.

The VFW, 4651 Homestead Road, is raising money for its building fund with a chili cook-off. The event is non-sanctioned and anyone can enter. The festivities will begin at 3 p.m. tomorrow as well. There is a $5 entry fee and chili will be sold for $4.

There will be live music and karaoke.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will be raising funds for the children in transition. CASA works with children who are victims of abuse or have been removed from their homes and are in foster care.

The event is a luau, complete with Kahlua pig, teriyaki chicken, mock poi, macaroni and ambrosia salad.

There will be live music, pick-a-prize raffles, a silent auction, other raffles and a grand-prize drawing with a mermaid diving for the winner.

The luau will be held at 7 p.m., tomorrow, Sept. 13, around the Wine Ridge RV resort pool on Winery Road.

Tickets are $45 and reservations are necessary. Call 775-513-9514.

Ms. Senior Golden Years USA Sandy Stell is hosting an “Operation Unmentionables” line-dance party to collect donations of socks, T-shirts, underwear and thermal underwear for homeless veterans.

The event is set for 7 p.m. at the Artesia clubhouse on Fox Drive.

Break out the western wear and learn line dancing from instructors “Tom and Brenda.” Stell said the routines are easy and participants don’t need a dance partner.

There will be door prizes and refreshments. Drop a donation at the door for admission.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are offering “Grow Your Own” classes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sept. 16 will be about selecting the right plants and Sept. 18 will be how to keep your lawn green and healthy.

Classes are $10 each.

Coming up Sept. 26, UNCE will offer a free workshop on growing fruit trees in high desert climates, pests to watch for as the seasons change and selecting trees for drought tolerance.

The event will be a video conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring a lunch. Space is limited to 25 individuals. Call Debby Woodland, 727-5532, to reserve a space.

The Senior Center will be raising money for Meals on Wheels with a western hoedown scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Sept. 19 in the Pahrump Nugget Events Center. Tickets are $10 and there will be live music, appetizers and a no host bar.

Tickets are on sale for a one-night-only show set for Sept. 20 at Sanders Family Winery. Adventure in Time: The Magical Mystic Music Shoppe starring Lynn Peterson will feature music from the 20’s through the war and into the big band sound. The costumes will fit the era from doo wop through the beginnings of rock and roll.

Tickets are $15 and reservations are recommended for the 7 p.m. show. Bring a picnic or snacks. Wine and other beverages will be available. Call 727-1776.

Tickets for the Kiwanis Laughing Under the Stars fundraiser are also on sale. That event, too, is scheduled for Sanders Winery and will be at 7 p.m., Sept. 26. Tickets are $20.

Tecopa, Calif., will be the place for the Death Valley Luau at 6 p.m., Sept. 27 at Tecopa Hot Springs Resort. The event is a joint effort of the Tecopa Artist Group and the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Rhyolite.
