New Year’s Eve is the drinking holiday in this country. People from every walk of life, even if they do not drink a drop of alcohol all year long, will drink a few sips just to celebrate the coming of the New Year, when as a nation we say good bye to the old and welcome in the new.
This is done differently across our land with different ways of celebrating depending on where you are from.
Depending on where you’re from, everyone has a different way of passing the time until the clock strikes midnight. Playing drinking games is a fast way to forget time and sometimes where you are.
Brent Burris, a resident of Las Vegas, said he likes playing Beer Pong on New Year’s. “It’s a way to get really drunk really fast and it’s amusing for a group of people to watch,” said Burris.
Stephanie Lopez, of Positive Pahrump, said her game of choice is Dirty Thirty. “This is a game where you take a shot every thirty minutes,” she said.
For those who want to be the life of the party this New Year’s Eve, here is a list of some easy drinking games often played in bars and a brief description of how the game is played: (Warning, the games are a fast way to lose yourself in alcohol before the clock strikes 12 and you might find yourself waking up the next day with a pounding headache, and not knowing where you are.)
Quarters: A popular but mindless game played by two or more people. All you need is a quarter, a cup and the urge to drink vast quantities of any alcohol. The object of the game is to flip a quarter into a cup of alcohol by banking the quarter off a table and then hoping it lands in the cup. If you miss, you drink. The winner is the person smiling at the end and not passed out.
Indian Poker: This game involves no skill whatsoever, just a deck of cards and some willing players. The cards are dealt to all the players who promptly put the card face out on their forehead. People have no idea what their card says. They have the option of keeping their card or drinking for a new one. The highest card wins and of course the winner makes everyone drink.
Flip, Strip or Sip: This is a fast way of getting to know your neighbor and for some reason it is popular with the guys. It is another game which involves no skill. Of course when drinking gallons of alcohol, playing games of this nature are a necessity. In this case, all you need is a coin. A player flips the coin in the air and tries to guess if it is heads or tails. If he guesses right he passes the coin to the right. If he guesses wrong, (this is where the fun starts) the player has the option of taking an article of clothing off or taking a drink. You can see where this game goes south pretty quick.
Ok, it’s New Year’s Eve in Pahrump, and you really have nothing going on at your house. Where can you find a drinking game to pass the time?
The drinking games more than likely will not be found in your local casino because there will not be that much room to play. Your best bet is to find a local neighborhood bar where you have a little leeway and some elbow room to move around.
Two bars have said they will allow drinking games to be played on their premises. Beer Pong is the most popular game. Sugar’s Bar and Restaurant, 3971 E. Kellogg Road, and Paddy’s Pub at 1700 Pahrump Valley Blvd., will both provide the gear to play Beer Pong.
Beer Pong involves some skill and it involves drinking vast quantities of beer. Irish Smith, a bartender at Paddy’s Pub, said Beer Pong exploded on the scene last summer when Paddy’s started to have summer beer pong tournaments. He said Paddy’s to this day will continue to have them.
Smith said his bar is the only one that he knows in the valley that has a beer pong tournament and has an official beer pong table.
He explains the game this way.
The table for this game is about 10 feet long and on either side there are holes in the shape of triangles. These are where the cups of beer go.
Smith said the basic game is played with two teams of two people. Each team has in front of them 10 cups of beer and gets at least two ping pong balls. The beer cups are arranged in the shape of a triangle like bowling pins. The object of the game is to toss your ping pong ball into the other team’s cups.
“One team shoots their balls. The ball can bounce in or make it in on the fly. In teams of two, two shooters shoot and if both balls make it into the cup that team gets to shoot again and the other team drinks,” said Smith.
The team in the end with the most cups left wins. The game is played until all 10 cups are gone.
“In a normal game two 12-ounce beers will fill all ten cups,” Smith remarked.
