Singles are making plans, seeking new members

By Kali Williams – Special to the Pahrump Valley Times

Anyone who has spent an evening alone knows all too well how disheartening it can be. The house is quiet and quite frankly, it can be rather boring and lonely. Luckily residents of Pahrump have an alternative to the usual “party for one.”
The Pahrump Singles Friendship Club has been around for over a decade and yet most people have never heard of it. So, what is this mysterious group you might ask? Though some may find the name misleading, this isn’t a club to go looking for your soul mate. The club aims to create a supportive and friendly environment for the “singles” community of Pahrump to meet new people and enjoy their company.
“I joined because I don’t like eating alone. That was my main reason,” board member Carol McGovern said. “The club was out eating at one of the Mexican restaurants and I ran into them as a group. I said, ‘Are you guys the friendship group? I heard you guys are all crazy.’ They responded, ‘Yep we are,’” she joked.
“It’s no fun eating by yourself, plus it gets you out of the house for a bit.” McGovern added.
Monthly business meetings are held the first Saturday at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office on Calvada Boulevard and Dandelion Street where the group organizes field trip affairs, outings and parties at members’ homes.
The meetings begin at 6 p.m. and are generally preceded by a potluck dinner at 5 p.m.
The group is all for socializing and having fun so they like to arrange a meal together at least once, but sometimes twice a week. The club’s other activities and trips are planned out as opportunities arise, and they generally schedule at least one field trip per month.
Activity suggestions from members are always welcomed and encouraged. The new executive board along with the club’s current members discussed this month’s dining plans and unanimously agreed to see a Red Skelton show at the Amargosa Opera House.
Other field trips taken recently include, a picnic at Ash Meadows, The Galleria Mall, The Hard Luck Mine and Castle, and The Ethel M Chocolate Factory just to name a few.
Though the Friendship Club’s outings were all very successful in previous years, they are looking to increase their numbers for 2013.
Current members range from age 50 and up, however anyone 21 or older who is not married is welcome to join.
The first club function is free and any additional meeting requires a payment of $2 monthly dues. If you are interested in attending a function or would like more information call Flora at 775-727-0895.
