7 arrested in heroin bust

Seven people were arrested last week after police raided a property on Casey Street and allegedly discovered more than 10 grams of heroin and a multitude of drug paraphernalia throughout the home.

On April 2 at approximately 10:43 p.m., Nye County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives served a search warrant on a home in the 1200 block of Casey Street. When they arrived and knocked on the door, announcing their presence, they received no answer and subsequently forced entry into the home.

According to the sheriff’s office, once inside several residents scattered to different rooms, locking the doors behind them — a tactic police said may have been an attempt to slow down their search and hide potential evidence.

After officers gained access to those rooms, they detained seven individuals later identified as William Culbertson, 49, Alexandra Bostain, 23, Kristin Hill, 27, Davin Obarr, 25, Kody Smith, 26, Kristin Smith, 26 and Shane Kiley.

During their search, police allegedly found numerous prescription pills, including Hydrocodone and Oxycodone, approximately 10.3 grams, or a golf ball sized amount, of heroin, and a large amount of drug paraphernalia, including small plastic baggies, glass pipes, baggies with methamphetamine residue, a digital scale, razor blades, spoons, hypodermic devices, tin foil, lighters and propane torches.

Inside a vehicle parked in the property’s driveway, which allegedly belonged to Culbertson, police also said they found an additional bag of suspected heroin weighing .5 grams as well.

Following their search police interviewed the seven suspects and found that at least five of them were allegedly under the influence of narcotics at the time.

According to a declaration of arrest in the case, Culbertson, Bostain, Kristin Smith and Obarr, all allegedly admitted to using narcotics within the last two days. Hill was also said to be exhibiting signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance as well, but her arrest report did not state whether she admitted any drug use to police.

Culbertson was arrested for conspiracy to violate the Uniform Controlled Substance Act; possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, heroin; under the influence of a controlled substance; trafficking in a controlled substance, heroin 4-14 grams; four counts of possession of a controlled substance; maintain residence for sale/gift/use of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bostain, Obarr, Hill and Kristin Smith were each arrested on charges of conspiracy to violate the Uniform Controlled Substance Act, under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kody Smith was taken into custody for conspiracy to violate the Uniform Controlled Substance Act and possession of drug paraphernalia and Kiley was reportedly arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

As of Tuesday morning Culbertson, Bostain, Obarr, Kody Smith and Kristin Smith all remained in custody at the Nye County Detention Center. Hill and Kiley have since been released.

Culbertson was booked two days later on additional charges after he allegedly stole Hydrocodone pills from another inmate’s pill bottle in the booking area of the jail.

According to his declaration of arrest in that case, on April 4, a NCSO detective learned 29 Hydrocodone pills had gone missing. After learning Culbertson had been in the area at the time of the theft, officers asked him about the missing pills and the man allegedly admitted to taking them, saying he needed them for his severe back pain.

Culbertson was subsequently taken to the local hospital for a medical evaluation. Once he was cleared, he was booked back into the jail on new charges of unlawful use of a controlled substance and petit larceny.
