County contracts awarded

Nye County Commissioners approved a number of contracts at the Tuesday meeting, including:

* The first change order with Alliance Landscaping and Water Features for $3,650 to add biofilters for the Calvada ponds;

* Two Motorola vehicle radio units for use in transporting juveniles, for $6,885.25;

* Accepting an Emergency Preparedness Working Group Supplemental Grant award for $201,585.45 to complete the Beatty ambulance barn; renovating a Round Mountain HAZMAT station; buying a one-ton cab and chassis for Manhattan; buying a used Polaris off-road vehicle; buying used ambulances and a new or used response vehicle for the county EMS station.

* Approving seven change orders with Wulfenstein Construction totaling $26,410 for improvements at Homestead Road and Highway 160.

* Awarding a $12,249 contract to Beatty Graphics to convert Nye County History Project documents to electronic format. The company billed the county at $1.50 per page for 8,166 pages.

* Awarding a $25,500 contract to AADS Office Solutions of Phoenix for a mobile shelving storage system in the county clerk’s office;

* Allowing the Pahrump town board to use the entire $75,000 county donation to repair the Bob Ruud Community Center roof, though Commissioner Butch Borasky wanted an eight-month time limit on the repairs.

* Awarding an $118,980 contact for janitorial services to Legacy Environmental Concepts of Las Vegas;

* Accepting the sole bid of $99,999 for phase II of the Tonopah Main Street sidewalk ramp project from Ben F. Dotson Construction of Fallon;

* Awarding a $251,026 contract to Floyd’s Construction to build a well building, including piping, meters, valves, fittings, electrical power and fencing at the Amargosa Valley Science and Technology Park;

* Voting to negotiate with BEC Environmental to identify, assess and plan the reuse of Brownfield sites, which are contaminated by industrial pollution, in a five-county area, to rehabilitate them for renewable energy projects, using a $1 million grant.

* Approving a $123,777 Community Development Block Grant application to reline a Gabbs water storage tank and $20,000 to train volunteer advocates for the Court Appointed Special Advocate CASA program;

* Approving a district court supervising and administrative legal secretary in the Pahrump district court at a cost of $72,075.

    What are these two radio’s made out of? Cell phones work pretty good, and you can get them for free.

    Even if the cell phone service cost was $40 a month, the break even point would be over 14 years.

    We probably already have county cell phones under contract that the drivers could use.
