Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo took it upon himself to make a few phone calls earlier this week.
Tuesday he spoke with County Commissioner Joni Eastley.
“She said she would have put an agenda on the Board of County Commissioner’s agenda to put incorporation on the ballot,” said DeMeo.
Of course, getting an agenda item on the commission’s agenda does not mean it will be acted upon. The last time putting incorporation on the ballot was on the agenda, it did not go to a vote because no motion was made to support or deny it.
However, the town does not have to go to the commissioners to get a question on the ballot.
DeMeo also called County Clerk Sam Merlino. “I found out that any government entity can place something on the ballot,” he said.
His statement is supported by Nevada Revised Statute 293.481.
Eastley told the sheriff that both Round Mountain and Tonopah have successfully gone to the clerk’s office in a timely manner, before July, to put questions to the voters on the general ballot.
State Sen. Mike McGinness told the Pahrump Valley Times it was also possible to submit a petition signed by a required number of voters.
“So either the Pahrump Town Board is deceitful or they are getting bad advice from the town manager or town attorney,” said DeMeo. “These people should go to Round Mountain or Tonopah to find out how to run a town.”
DeMeo also suggested the town staff “ask the marijuana people how they get on the ballot all the time. There hasn’t been a time in recent history when they haven’t had legalizing marijuana on the general ballot for a vote. They do it by petition.
“Maybe Bill Kohbarger or the town attorney should get some education, because apparently those two individuals don’t know what they are doing. I believe they wanted to sidestep the people’s right to vote.”
DeMeo doesn’t think much of Kohbarger’s suggestion to hire a polling company to survey residents’ opinions about incorporating Pahrump.
“Why don’t we just take a poll right now and find out who the next governor is?” DeMeo asked. “Or the next county commissioner, the next sheriff, the next town board member and all the others that run for election. We don’t need the voting process when we can hire a polling company to take a survey.”
DeMeo was adamant that the issue was the vote of the people. “They just want to side-step that,” he said of the town officials.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!
since when does a county sheriff tell a county what to think or HAVE an opinion? He is appionted and paid to fulfill his job . His personal issues and feelings one way or another should never impact his job decision making.. Let’s maintain some boundries and simple guidelines people… If you want incorporation, move to clark county! end of story.
DeMeo states: ““Maybe Bill Kohbarger or the town attorney should get some education, because apparently those two individuals don’t know what they are doing. I believe they wanted to sidestep the people’s right to vote.”
Amen to that Brother, and ‘thanks again for bringing their deceitful ways to light.
If Town Manager Bill Kohbarger, Town Attorney Rick Campbell and Town Board Member Vicky Parker cannot perform their duties, FOR THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE, then they should resign – or be fired.
Tony telling it like it is, keep up the good work sheriff.
For DJ:First, the Sheriff wasn’t telling anyone “what to think.” What he told is what HE thinks, and he has just as much right to do so as you or I. Try visiting the First Amendment to the Constitution. Also, he is NOT “appointed” to his position of Nye County Sheriff…..he is ELECTED! And, he can call and talk with any other county employee whenever he wants, just like you and I. The “Kohbarger Krew” needs to just pack up and go somewhere else. They are not wanted nor needed here in Pahrump. And, DJ, I agree wholeheartedly with your LAST statement!
Why is the Sheriff even involved in this issue? Shouldn’t his main concerns be controlling crime? The Town board member and the Town manager meeting with a State Senator is his business why??? Rumor Mongering is the quickest way to end up unemployed while in the midst of an election. “There’s a Rumor going around…” In my opinion…” “they looked like deer in headlights…” “They didn’t answer the question…” Yup, sounds like a clear case of “beyond a reasonable doubt” How many criminal cases has he manufactured supposed evidence about since being in office?
He had my vote till all of this started up. Scott has it now… as well as ALL OF MY NEIGHBORS (I live in a sane portion of town where we all know to wear hats in the sun).
Its because the minute this town incorporates Tony is out of a job ! and he knows it! He is in the back pockets of the 6 morons who think there kings
“DeMeo also suggested the town staff “ask the marijuana people how they get on the ballot all the time. There hasn’t been a time in recent history when they haven’t had legalizing marijuana on the general ballot for a vote. They do it by petition.”
I called and asked that group how they did it… They said they couldn’t remember
The sheriff in Nye County is elected, not appointed, to clarify a point …
