National gas price drops below $2

The holidays are delivering a gift to drivers nationwide as gas prices are dipping below $2 for the first time since 2009, according to AAA.

The lower gas prices are expected to spur a slew of drivers on the road, with a record 100.5 million people traveling 50 miles or more during the holiday season.

Despite the national average falling below $2, Nevada remains above that threshold at $2.49 according to gasbuddy.com.

Pahrump has been at or below the $2 mark, the low mark in town being at $1.97 and a high of $2.49.

Low global oil demand and continued high production combined have given motorists the unexpected present.

With the good news comes the bad. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration predicts the increased miles on the road could push fatalities up 8.1 percent for the year. If that happens, it would be the largest year-over-year percentage jump since 1946, according to the organization.
