Senior center gets turkey delivery

By Kelsey Givens

HealthCare Partners of Nevada donated turkeys to the Pahrump Senior Center last week.

“Today’s donation is for the Pahrump Senior Center with 25 turkeys for this year’s Thanksgiving feast,” HealthCare Partners’ Liam McCaul said Thursday afternoon. “As far as I know they do two servings, and a lot of the turkeys also will go to their homebound seniors that can’t really get out to go get a great meal so they improvise with a nice hot meal for Thanksgiving.”

The boxes of frozen turkeys were delivered by truck to the senior center and were received by kitchen staff waiting to take them inside.

A short assembly line was formed from the back of the truck carrying the donated turkeys inside the building, where box after box of frozen birds was passed from one person to the next until they were all inside.

Anne Blankenship, manger of the Pahrump Senior Center, estimated they would be serving approximately 200 to 250 people between two meals at the center today and another 120 homebound seniors with the donated turkeys.

“I’d just like to thank HealthCare Partners again for all they’ve done for us; they’ve been really, really super this year and helped us out so many times with so many things, we really appreciate it,” she said.

McCaul added that HealthCare Partners was just happy to be able to give back to the community it serves.

“We took care of this ourselves. We felt we’d like to give back to the community and this is one of the major holidays that are coming up, besides Christmas, but we just wanted to help and do what we can and do our part for the senior center,” he said.

The senior center will be serving up the donated poultry at an 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. dinner setting.

Blankenship added that any volunteers who wanted to come down and help serve the senior citizens coming to enjoy their meals would be more than welcome to do so.

“Volunteers are always welcome, especially on that day, because we have so many to serve. And a lot of times we have a lot of our local politicians and community people that come in and help us. I don’t know who is coming down, we never really know, but if anybody would like to come down and help serve we would be more than happy to have you here,” she said.

For those looking past the Thanksgiving holiday to future events coming up, McCaul said HealthCare Partners will be hosting an event at the Pahrump Nugget on Nov. 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to answer questions about health care. And the organization will also be hosting a patient appreciation movie night on Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. at Saddle West.

“We’re having a patient appreciation movie night at Saddle West on Dec. 1 from three to five in the afternoon, and we’ll be showing ‘Holiday Inn’ with Bing Crosby. And there will be free popcorn and candy for the people that attend, we just encourage people to RSVP at our Desert View clinic,” he said.
