There’s a time for every season. And if you don’t believe the Bible, listen to 60s super group The Byrds.
The season is summer, and it’s clearly time for some fun around here — turn, turn, turn.
Activities abound, whether your definition of fun is sitting poolside under the sun, attending all of the community events going on, or simply getting the kids out of the house for a while.
So, if you’re not in full summertime mode by now, let us remind you of what you’re missing.
First, there’s the community pool that just opened. So if you don’t have a pool of your own, please take advantage of this one. It’s recently renovated and open to the public. You can even rent it out for birthday parties and private gatherings. The parks, in general, in Pahrump offer fine places to enjoy some summertime weather, maybe catch a movie during free movie nights on Saturdays beginning July 2 and more.
Indoor activities for kids might be a bit sparse, but there is the new Pahrump Youth Activities Club it’s full right now , which is in its inaugural year and looks to be something that could catch on for summers to come. There’s always bowling at the Nugget and the museum just reopened for a little history and culture. Check the local library and other groups for any other activities that could keep kids busy indoors when it’s 110 outside.
A few upcoming events to note are the 15th anniversary celebration Terrible’s Casino on Highway 160 is hosting as well as the Miss Pahrump pageant. Both are on Saturday and should be a treat. July 4 is just around the corner and barbecues and parties will take place all over.
One event you can’t miss is the Chamber of Commerce’s Liberty Festival July 2, 3 and 4 at Petrack Park. A pie-eating contest, tug-of-war, water balloon toss, movie and free swimming in the pool takes place the first night and similar events round out the festival the rest of that holiday weekend. The Nugget will have its fireworks show on July 3.
Maverick Saloon and Dance Hall will be hosting events all summer long, including tonight’s Bob Seger cover band Turn the Page and a pajama party next Thursday. The saloon is holding a steakout on July 4.
Pahrump Idol, a popular part of the fall’s Pahrump Fair and Festival, will hold its initial auditions next month. All singers welcome. And if you like cribbage, the Nugget will be hosting a tournament July 29-31.
These events and a lot more should make for an eventful summer should you choose to spend your time here. Of course, the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, is over the hill for a cheap getaway. Lake Mead is close if you need some water in your diet, SoCal, too for some ocean-going.
Let’s face it, Southern Nevadans need a respite. We deserve it. The last six months, or three years, however you look at it, haven’t exactly been the stuff of dreams. The housing crisis and unemployment have given us all a bit of anxiety.
These next few months are when we should set a lot of that anxiety aside and live a little, even if this year we’ve had to forego the family vacation or keep it local.
Whatever you do, just have fun and slow down a bit. There’ll be plenty of time come fall to fret about work and home.
