Tonopah woman arrested on murder charge

A Tonopah woman has been arrested on a charge of first degree murder with use of a deadly weapon stemming from an incident at National 9 Motel on Friday.

Maureen R. Kinnamon, 49, was arrested after Nye County Sheriff’s Office found her with the victim, stating “she didn’t mean to hurt her like this.”

Police responded at 10:25 p.m. to a report of a female, later identified as Penny Sue Silas, having been allegedly stabbed. According to police, Silas was found unresponsive on the second story balcony of the motel, with Kinnamon sitting over Silas crying for help. The victim died a short time later at the Nye Regional Medical Center.

According to the report, Kinnamon was taken into custody when she made statements that she had done this to Silas.

During the crime scene investigation, multiple items of evidence were located in and around the motel room that was shared by Kinnamon and Silas, including the weapon allegedly used to kill Silas.

Kinnamon is being held in the Tonopah Detention Center without bail.
