TONOPAH — Nye County Chief Prosecutor Kirk Vitto, a 20-year county employee, was appointed interim district attorney Tuesday by county commissioners until Nov. 22, when Brian Kunzi will take the post.
Former Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett resigned his post effective Nov. 1, in a plea bargain to a charge of obstruction of a public officer, in connection with the administration of the bad check program.
Commissioner Joni Eastley made the motion. Fellow commissioner Lorinda Wichman wondered if the D.A.’s office could get by until January without a district attorney when Kunzi’s regular term begins.
Eastley said the county never filled former chief civil deputy district attorney Ron Kent’s position, after he was terminated by Beckett last February. But assistant county manager Pam Webster said the county didn’t include Kent’s position in the current fiscal year budget.
Eastley was correct when she said Nye County will save money not having to pay Kunzi the longevity pay Beckett enjoyed. Webster said that will save the county $16,000 for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends June 30. Another $10,000 savings will be realized from having Vitto in that position for half of November, she said.
Eastley said her observation has been the district attorney’s office has been in a state of chaos for more than a year. Two other D.A.’s office employees have had to pick up Kent’s workload, she said, referring to Marla Zlotek, the newly-appointed chief civil deputy district attorney, and Michelle Jones, a deputy district attorney.
Eastley disagreed with Wichman’s suggestion to keep Vitto as interim D.A. until January.
“We would be asking him to assume the responsibilities of providing direction to that department in addition to having a huge caseload in the criminal department,” Eastley said. She added, “This department is in strong need of permanent direction.”
Kunzi, who made the trip to Tonopah, said he already worked out his early resignation from the state attorney general’s office.
“This is a very vital concern to the office in being able to get in here early. There has been a lot of chaos in the office as commissioner Eastley stated. This helps in the transition and making some of the changes I want to do,” Kunzi said.
Witch Man has a point.Kent was not replaced and Bad Boy Beckett has not been doing his job for years.So why don’t they save some real money and get rid of all of them.Outsource it.Eastley is drunk with power and only does what she wants.The word I got from two sources,including Kent, it that the Asst. DA’s run their private practice from the County office.This whole act needs to be entered in Ripley’s Believe it or Not so we can gather some more laughs as the idiots of the universe.

Joni Eastley is one of the most honest and hard working people in this county. Kirt Vitto would have made a fine DA but I can understand him not wanting to take a pay cut. He does a fine job. Keep up the good work.
Why shouldn’t the Nye Co. DDA’s realize more income from private practice–the public defenders there get to do the same, & those bozos get 660k per year, thanks to their “in like Flintism” with Eastley?!
Kirk is by far the best prosecutor in the office. If it wasn’t for him, Beckett’s incompetence would have come up long ago. Kirk is smart not to take the pay cut for the headache, but I hope he continues to put serious criminals away effectively. A lot of predators are out of this county because of Vitto’s good work. DDA’s White and Vietta-Kabell also do good work.
Im sorry to disagree with you, but part of being a prosecutor is trying to get to the truth. I have seen DDA White lose paperwork to keep people in jail longer than they are supposed to, as well as when a person is found inocent by evidence and still does everything possible to keep them in jail including to get them to take a deal for something they did not do. He also will use witnesses that he knows have commited perjury and will not prosecute them for perjury. Do you really think that is a good DDA?
So, you think Vitto is a good prosecutor because he somehow managed to cover for Bob Beckett – WOW.
Lisa, I thought you were going to jump off a bridge to save taxpayers money. And Tidmarsh, that is exactly why he is a good DDA. LIP- I meant that Vitto did his job well enough that the people didn’t see how screwed up Beckett was. I wasn’t infering that Vitto covered for Beckett intentionally, just that he put a professional face on Beckett’s crumbling office.

Kirk Vitto is a sad representation of a ADA. He will not ok charges of Embezzlement against the Town Manager but in the paper they charged a ordinary citizen with 27 counts of Embezzlement and Burglary. Do you think he is a good ADA for that. Or just afraid to make waves locking up public figures. I leave it to your own thinking processes.
