BASKETBALL: Lady Hornets slam door on Beaver Dam

By Vern Hee

The Lady Hornets basketball team saw action in two games last Friday and Saturday.

The Hornets beat Beaver Dam, 39-18.

Aimee Senior, head Hornets basketball coach, said she felt her team played well against them.

“We moved the ball well, worked our offense better, didn’t have as many turnovers as we usually do, and rebounded pretty well. We are shooting a lot, which is good but we need to improve our shooting percentage. That’s what’s hurting us when we play tougher teams,” said coach.

The team then went up against their archrivals the Pahranagat Valley Panthers and lost 51 – 36.

“We came out against Alamo with both feet on the ground running. We put a full court press on against them which worked well. In the past, we’ve had to pull the press off because they capitalized on it against us, but we held them with our press this game. I think it wore us out though,” remarked Senior.

The Hornets led the first quarter 11- 15, but after that they started turning the ball over, making bad passes and shooting less. The team’s shooting percentage was low, which hurt the girls in the end.

“If the girls can get their shooting percentage up, we’ll be hanging right with Alamo. They pressed us, which they pulled off because we were moving the ball well and breaking it. Overall, I’m pleased with the way the team played. They moved the ball well, and started to take advantage, in the 4th quarter, of our height advantage over Alamo. We’ll be looking forward to playing them again. Alamo is tough, as usual, but if we can get our shots to fall, and not have as many turnovers, we will hold our own against them the next time we play them which will hopefully be in the playoffs,” commented Senior.

The Hornets boys basketball team last week was busy. They played Spring Mountain last Tuesday and lost, 59-38. Leo Verzilli, head Beatty coach, felt his team was out of sync.

“Our kids were a bit rusty after break and we won’t schedule games that soon after break again,” said coach.

His team then played three more games last week starting with Word of Life on Thursday, Beaver Dam on Friday and ending with Pahranagat Valley on Saturday.

“We Beat Word of Life on Thursday. It was a good game. We had better legs. Our shooting and rebounding was also better. We then played Beaver Dam on Friday and beat them in overtime, by 7 points. We shot 50% from floor only, had only 10 turnovers and we shot 70% from the foul line,” said Verzilli.

The team then played Pahranagat Valley and lost 54-31.

“We went to Alamo and got beat by 20, we were down by 4 at half and playing well. Turnovers and being tired took over. The kids played hard as always. The game is there. We just can’t hit enough shots when they do,” commented coach.

The Hornets play three home games this week, Wednesday against Adelson 5:30 p.m.; on Friday Pahrump comes to town at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday Round Mountain, 4 p.m.
