The Trojans are winding down a rough season with just three games left. Tonight they are at home against Western.
The Western boys are 0-7 and at the bottom of the standings. Brian Hayes, head boys basketball coach, hopes to get his second league game win here.
The boys lost to second place Cheyenne, 69-29. Hayes said his team still struggles offensively.
Next week, the boys play Mojave and then Faith. In the boys league, Mojave is tied with Faith at 4-3 for the third place spot.
In other games around the league, the Faith Lutheran boys beat Western 72-50, and Clark beat Mojave, 71-39.
Dalton Beighley scored 9 points, and Quon Cotton and Jimmy Broadhead added 7 points.
Girls
The girls squad also plays Western tonight at home. Action starts at 5 p.m. for them. The team lost the first game against Western, who is 3-4 and soundly in fourth place.
For the girls, Faith is in first place and Mojave is in fifth place. The girls also had a rough night at Cheyenne last night.
The Trojan girls lost to second place Cheyenne in a brutal away game, 38-17, to fall to 0-7.
Jennifer Hagstrom, head Trojans coach, said again the girls were close at the end.
“It was an 11-point game with four minutes to go, we had to pick up and press and they ran away with it at the end of the game. The girls stuck with them, but the turnovers and inability to rebound with Cheyenne at the end was the difference in the game,” said Hagstrom.
Stats:
Kayla Skilling-5 points, and 6 rebounds;
Shayla Dance-4 points, and 8 rebounds.
In the girls league play, Clark girls beat Mojave, 44-27, and the Faith Lady Crusaders beat the Western girls, 68-30.
Division IV
Beatty boys beat Word of Life on Tuesday night 53-51.
Leo Verzilli, head Beatty coach, feels the game was too close for comfort.
“The game was closer than it should have been and the kids had to dig deep to win this one. We played a lot of different rotations. We just couldn’t shake them. We went back and forth. It was a good experience for us, and our no-quit attitude goes a long way,” said Verzilli.
The Hornets boys do not play until Tuesday.
Stats: Gomez 14, Zamora 7, Dunlap 12.
Lady Hornets
The Lady Hornets destroyed Word of Life for a victory, 60-23 in a non-league game.
Aimee Senior, head Beatty girls coach, said it was a good game to get ready for the playoffs.
“It’s games like these that the team needs to sharpen their fundamentals and work on the skills that we are repeatedly telling them they need to do. They played well and had fun and that’s important too,” said the coach.
The girls go into action in league play Saturday at 12 p.m. against Lund, away.
Word of Life Stats: Scoring- Melynda 16, Ginny 12, Shankara 11, Lucero 9, Nicole 6, Ester 4, & Christina 2. Rebounds – Lucero 12, Shakara 5, Melynda, Ginny, & Ester 4, & Ginny had 9 steals & 5 assists.
