The third annual Donkey Basketball game will played at the high school gym on March 6 at 7 p.m. This is quality family entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.
The evening is full of laughs for the entire family and it helps the high school and middle school to raise funds for special programs to reward students.
Each year for the evening eight teams play in a tournament. The teams come from all walks of the community.
The Nye County School District puts up an elementary schools staff team, a middle school staff team, a high school staff team, a high school student team and a Nye County School District staff team. In addition to the school district teams, there is a Pahrump business team and a Nye County Sheriffs team.
The business team so far will be represented by the following businesses: Threadz Clothing, Nick Moore; Quality Signs, Cassandra Selbach; Satellite Systems, D. J. Mills; Keith Campbell, Wings and Things; Jimmy Floyd, Nova Engineering; Mike Floyd, Floyd Construction and there will be more.
The successful fundraiser was started two years ago by Rosemary Clarke Middle School Principal, Tim Wombaker, to raise money for a special fund for his students that pays for incentives and rewards for those who do well with grades, testing and attendance.
During the school year, students have an opportunity to earn bikes or win a trip to the Nugget Bowling Alley or Treasure RV, to name a few.
Wombaker said he had done this fundraiser up North and it was highly successful so he decided to start it down here.
Last year Rosemary Clarke said 894 tickets were sold for a total of $6,000. This means after the asses were paid for PVHS and RCMS will split $3,419.94 (about $1,000 more than the first year.)
The game was well received last year said Mom’s Diner owner, Larry Chumley.
“It was really cool. The donkeys pretty much do what they want to do and you can’t leave your donkey. If you have to go get the ball on the floor, you have to take your donkey with you. It is a family event all the way from tiny kids up to old people having a ball, laughing and roaring.”
The winner of the tourney last year was the PVHS staff team who beat the business team in the finals. This team said they are ready for the business team this year according to Trojans Coach Craig Rieger.
“The high school staff will win,” Rieger said. “We may be small but we’re slow, but we are also state champs.”
Nick Moore for the business team said Rieger will eat his words.
“This year we will get our asses in gear,” he said.
