Lady Trojans lose two playoff games, but still headed to state

The Lady Trojans played Moapa Valley twice on Saturday at Southeast Career Technical Academy on Saturday.

The girls lost both games 6-5, but will still be going to state as the second seed.

“Of course the girls were distraught after losing the championship game,” Trojans coach Eli Armendariz said. “We will be ready to play on Thursday. I think the state tournament will be competitive games.”

The Trojans had to play Moapa Valley twice on Saturday because the regional tournament is a double elimination tourney and Moapa had to defeat Pahrump twice because Pahrump was undefeated going into the tournament.

Ironically, the Trojans defeated Boulder City, No. 1-seeded team on their home field on Thursday only to lose to the second-seed team, a team they beat earlier in the playoffs 8-5.

Moapa Valley then did the unthinkable and won four straight games in a row, beating Chaparral 15-5 and then Boulder City 5-4. That set up the two wins against Pahrump Valley on Saturday to take the regional title, something the Trojans did in 2014, when they took the regional title as the third-seed team. That year they beat all the top-seeded teams to take the title. Senior Jordan Egan was a freshman on that team.

The Trojans play the Churchill County High School Green Wave from Fallon at Faith Lutheran High School at 4:30 p.m. on May 18.

The Green Wave is known for solid hitting, scoring 10-11 runs per game.
