The Pahrump Valley High School girls golf team is headed to state.
Its members finished in third place at the Class 3A Southern Regional Championships on Tuesday at the Las Vegas Golf Club and will be headed to state next week at Mountain Falls Golf Course on Oct. 18-19.
The team shot a 767 for two days of golf. Boulder City won the regional (704) and Tech was second (744).
“I would like to think Boulder City is the team to beat,” Trojans head golf coach Bob Hopkins said.
Trojans golfer, freshman Breanne Nygaard, was the top golfer for the Trojans, shooting an 8-above-par 80 on both days and finishing in third place after the two-day tournament.
Lani Potter of Boulder City won the regional title with a 147 and Cassidy Phelan of Tech was second (159).
In day two of the two-day tournament, Nygaard played well on the front nine, according to her coach, shooting a 3-above-par 39.
“She just ran into trouble on the back nine, which was the opposite of Petrie, who played better on the back nine,” Hopkins said.
“(Makalea) Petrie had problems with some bunkers and played better on the back nine on the second day, shooting a 39 on the back. We are working on the short game and we will be playing on our home course and it should be worth some strokes for us,” he said.
Petrie finished eighth (187) out of 24 golfers.
Other players on the team
“Ashleigh Murphy shot her best front nine of the season (53) and has grown a lot,” Hopkins said. “She and Mckayla Bartley have come a long way for being in their first year of golf. If anything, we have some regional and tournament experience and this will help us in the future for we have only one senior graduating this year.”
Senior Desirae Hembree finished 13th (206), and junior Jessica Pearson finished 14th (213).
The coach talked about what his team had to do to do well at the state tournament, which is also a two-day tourney.
The girls will be playing on their home course so they will be tougher to beat.
“We need to have Nygaard shooting 80 or less and Petrie, 90 or less,” he said. “The other girls need to do 100 or less.”
