Horace Langford Jr. / Pahrump Valley Times - Trojans hard-hitting Payton Hart gets ready to pound the ball in 2012 action. Trojans volleyball last year finished in second place. They were able to do this because Coach Jill Harris had set up a tough tournament schedule in the early fall. This year, Harris says, will be more of the same.
Trojans Volleyball Coach Jill Harris realized last year her team was only as good as those they played. This year, with this in mind she worked hard during the spring to play as many good teams she could find.
“We have the LVI ( a Las Vegas tournament), our tournament and then we are going to Boulder City September 20 and 21.
“I had a few more contacts and a little better understanding of how things are in our division. I was way more on it than I was on it last year. I scheduled the non-league games myself,” she said.
She said this year her girls are more excited about volleyball and will have more power than last year.
Harris said the Pahrump Valley Invitational will have about 20 teams this year, which is way more than last year.
The tournament will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and each team is guaranteed four games. The tournament is set for Sept. 7.
“We will have teams that have never come before because we are putting the tournament all in one day,” the coach said.
The tournament last year was a two-day affair and shaving off a day means more teams can afford to come because of the mileage and overnight stay factor.
By going to the right tournaments, teams can really play some hard opponents. Last year’s team played competitive division one teams during tournament play and this made the team hard to beat during league. This year Harris hopes to do the same.
