WRESTLING: Trojans shine at Bullhead City meet

By Vern Hee

The Trojans matmen continue to inch toward a conference title. Last weekend they had a strong showing against some of the top wrestling teams in Southern Nevada and teams in Arizona.

The team traveled to Bullhead City where 16 schools were gathered at the Mohave High School Invitational. At the invitational, each team wrestled seven duals.

Many of the teams were Division 1 teams. The Trojans wrestled four teams on Friday night and three on Saturday.

The team finished sixth out of 16 teams and went 5-2 over the weekend. Craig Rieger, head Trojans coach, was very satisfied with his team’s effort.

“A lot of wrestling over the weekend. I was satisfied with the conditioning. We were flat in a couple of the matches. I had to fire the team up a couple of times. We went flat against Mojave from North Las Vegas. Liberty showed us we can always work harder and there is someone always working harder than us. Overall, it was good,” said coach.

In the duals, Sam Gomez went 5-4 for fourth place, Levi Gundacker went 7-2 and took second place, Jace and Jax Clayton both went 7-2 and took third and Kyle Daffer went 6-3 and took fourth.

“This was Kyle’s best wrestling of the year. He needs to improve on his physical strength, but was very solid over the weekend. He had some good wins for us and himself,” said coach.

The Trojans are gearing up for their final match of league wrestling. The match against Faith Lutheran tonight at 6 p.m. will be for the league title. The Trojans are undefeated in league play and hope a win will give them good momentum going into divisionals.

“We are hoping for a conference title. Faith I hear has improved a lot. Anything can happen during a match up. It just depends on the match up. Each boy has to wrestle at a high level otherwise you start dropping individual matches and the team is going to fall. This is important. We want to have the momentum going into divisionals,” remarked Rieger.
