A number of events are scheduled for this weekend as the temperatures begin to change and before residents take those summer vacations.
First up is Donna Lamm’s Studio of Dance annual recital. Her classes will all perform choreographed, costumed performances in the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium.
The 35th annual event will stage three shows. The first will be tonight at 7 p.m. Two shows for Saturday are set for 1 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 at the door.
No to Abuse is holding another fundraiser to benefit “Nesting Safe Families,” a program aiding in safe placement for families in crises.
The event is set from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 17 in the Pahrump Nugget Events Center, where attendees will enjoy 21 live performances, hors d’oeuvres, pick-a-prize raffles and sealed silent auctions for the table centerpieces. There will be a cash bar.
Organizer Carole Fucillo said several acts are coming from Las Vegas to sing, dance and play music for the event. Other performers are local and include Johnny “V” as Elvis. Others will offer song and dance performances as well. The raffle prizes have been donated by local businesses and a drawing will take place after each set of seven performances.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
Tickets are $15 per person or $25 per couple and are available at the Gold Bar inside the Nugget and at the door.
The Senior Center is hosting a prom sponsored by Creekside Hospice and HealthCare Partners to let the older generations remember their own proms.
The event is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 17 at the Senior Center, 1370 W. Basin Ave.
The theme is “Memories Are Made of This,” so break out those 50’s gowns hanging in the closet and velour suits if you can find them, grab that special someone and join the group for food, beer and wine, dancing and prom pictures. The queen and king of the prom will be crowned as well.
The event is open to anyone over 21 and tickets are $10 per person. Advance tickets are available at the senior center and at Creekside Hospice, 2200 E. Calvada Blvd.

The writers’ circle group has found a new place to meet since Off 160 Coffee House closed. The gathering is open to everyone seeking advice and learn techniques for creating poetry and prose.
The event, with Billie Polkosnick, will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Draft Picks, formerly Wulfy’s on Highway 160.
The group meets the third Saturday of every month and it’s free.
NyE Communities Coalition will begin a series of diabetes self-management workshops beginning Tuesday, May 20.
There will be six Tuesday meetings set from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., in Room 29 of the NyECC campus, 1021 E. Wilson Road.
The classes are recommended for people with type-2 diabetes and they are also appropriate for spouses of diabetics.
The workshops are facilitated from a highly-detailed manual and taught by trained leaders who may be affected by diabetes themselves.
Classes will cover techniques to deal with the symptoms of fatigue, pain hyper/hypoglycemia, stress and emotional issues.
The second class will cover exercise to build endurance.
Other classes will be geared to healthy eating, uses of medication and working effectively with health care providers.
