Ash Meadows hosts night hike

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge will host a “Discover the Dark, Dark Meadow” guided hike at 8 p.m. Aug. 3 in the refuge. Pre-registration is required.

The intent is learning how the nighttime desert dwellers use their senses in adapting to life in the dark.

This family event will cover the differences between physical night and day and how it has effected the sensory organs of nocturnal animals. For example, do they have larger eyes? What is the difference between how humans perceive light versus animals and insects?

The participants will learn about how some types of animals have adapted hearing to compensate for the inability to see and why others hunt for food by tasting and heat seeking abilities.

The sense of smell also becomes important to night hunters.

Be sure to bring water, a flashlight, a light jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes.

For more information on where the group will meet and to register for the hike call Anica at 775-240-9173 or email anica_mercado@fws.gov.
