Balloon inspired “Yorbs” — Yarn and balloon orbs

I’ve been inspired by the Pahrump Balloon Festival happening this weekend to make some cool yarn orbs or “yorbs.” All it takes is a few balloons, glue and yarn. See? Frugal and fabulous! This is such a cool décor idea with so many applications. Once you know how to make them you’ll be hooked.

First I must warn you: It’s a messy two-person job, but it’s really fun. The glue concoction will drip so, I suggest you prepare an area for this craft by covering your surface with newspaper, or head outside, or just set up in a washable area like the bathtub.

What You’ll Need:

Balloons

Scissors

Cotton yarn

A bowl for mixing

1 four oz. bottle of white school glue

1/2 cup of corn starch – optional

2 Tbsp. of water

Cooking spray or petroleum jelly

Here’s How:

Prepare your work area. If you wish, you can construct a way to suspend the balloons. Placing a dowel between two chairs works well, as does setting this project up in the bathroom and using the shower curtain rod. (I used my baker’s rack.)

Blow up balloons to the size of the yorb you wish to make. Spray them with cooking spray, or smear with petroleum jelly so the yarn won’t stick once it’s dry.

Mix corn starch, glue and warm water together until it’s smooth.

Have one person dip the yarn in the glue mixture and the second person wrapping the yarn around the balloons.

When you feel you’ve wrapped enough, let it dry completely. (This may take as long as 24 hours) Then carefully pop the balloon, and fish it out.

Diva Tips: Put a small candy or toy in the balloon before you blow it up. When you pop the balloon the item will be inside the yorb.

Be sure as you wrap you don’t leave gaps large enough for the item to fall out. Perfect for Easter. A bunch of white yorbs look great placed among a string of clear Christmas lights to decorate a table.

You can wrap only the bottom half the balloon to make a bowl. To use outdoors spray with clear fast-drying spray paint to protect them. Make a bunch of small ones in holiday colors, and then fill a festive bowl as a table decoration.
