Six Beatty High School FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) students qualified at a state competition in Reno to go to the nationals in San Diego on July 3-8. All were students of Julie Moen.
Gold medalist Summer Taylor qualified in recycle and redesign. Competitors in this event were required to create a display showing how they had used a fashion, home, or post-consumer item to create a totally new product.
They also had to make an oral presentation and complete a chart of the skills they used to create the project.
Silver medalist Angelina Altman qualified in life event planning.
This requires contestants to plan to manage the costs of an event that will bring life changes and financial challenges. They have to develop a budget for and portfolio of the event.
The silver medalist team of Alejandro Granados and Jorge Perez qualified in enterpreneurship.
They were required to develop a plan for a small business that made use of skills learned in family and consumer sciences class. This included a written plan using sound business practices and an oral presentation.
Silver medalists Aspen Miller and Kathryn Stephenson are going to the nationals in food innovations.
As a team, they created an original food product, demonstrating knowledge of food science, nutrition, food preparation safety and product marketing.
They were required to make an oral presentation, a display and suggested product packaging.
A number of other Beatty students earned medals in the state competition. Courtney Willis was a gold medalist in fiber arts. Ivette Almeida, Sandra Garcia, Kim Knode, Andrea Leon, Brandon Rebujio and Matt Reetz were silver medalists in the same event.
Aysleen Guerra was a dual gold medalist in fiber arts and chapter banner, Sandra Cordova and Simone Guevara were silver medalists in cake decorating, and Ruthie Myers and Luiz Rodgriguez were both dual silver medalists in cake decorating and fiber arts.
Bronze medalists were Francisco Cardenas, Claudia Granados, and Jorge Perea in life event planning, and Francisco Cardenas, Sandra Garcia, Simone Guevara, Andrea Leon, and Brandon Rebujio in member facts.
