School is back in session and it seems most activities are gearing up for fall, although those planning to attend the Shadow Mountain Players’ final performance for the year should make plans to pick up tickets at the Library or at the door. The show will be staged as a dinner theater for three weekend performances. See the related story on page 13.
The HUBB is hosting live music from solo performers this Friday and Aug. 22. Tonight will be Jerry Wayne Parks performing classic rock. The show begins at 8:30 at the bar on Bell Vista Road.
Several charity organizations have plans for fundraisers and are seeking sponsorship or participants.
Soroptimist International Pahrump Valley is launching its first “Bra Bling” fundraiser and is seeking participants. Committee member Laurayne Murray said, “Jean Johnson brought up the subject at one of our meetings and it sounded like fun.” Johnson had participated in a similar project and is pictured above in her blinged-out bra.
The funds raised at the eventual auction will benefit breast cancer research and those undergoing treatment for the disease.
Murray said, “We’ve seen photos of bras re-purposed as purses, hats and other items. This is an anything goes, so design and creativity are encouraged.”
Participants first need to pick up an application at the Chamber of Commerce, CC’s Beauty Zone, Tail’s End Animal Shelter or from a Soroptimist member. The submission deadline is Sept. 10 and there is a $10 entry fee for each bra submitted. Create as many as you like.
The organization is also seeking businesses willing to display the finished Bra Bling and give the public the opportunity to judge the entries.

Wednesday, Aug. 20, the public will have an opportunity to help homeless students in the valley by dining at PV Wings N Things, 1301 S. Loop Road.
The restaurant will donate 10 percent of all food sales to the Nye County School District Homeless Activities Fund. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Linda Fitzgibbons manages the program and said that it is grant funded but the grant money only provides for specific things such as transportation, scholarships and other educational expenses. “It doesn’t fund daily necessities like clothing, shoes and toiletries.
“We had a homeless student come in looking for a can opener. He had gotten the food but couldn’t open the can. We never know from day to day what someone will need. This fund supports requests for items like books for college students.”
Other fundraisers for the Homeless Activities Fund are held throughout the year but Fitzgibbons said most of them happen in November.
“Lakeview Golf Course holds a clothes for kids golf tournament for us. Horizon Markets has a truck and car show fundraiser for us, too.”
She added “Rock for a Cause,” the music festival sponsored by Fidelis Christian Church, has been for the benefit of the fund for the past two years.
“Anyone can donate or set up a fundraiser for us,” Fitzgibbons said. Call 727-1875 for more information on participating.
Nathan Adelson is seeking sponsorships for its third annual “Stairway to Heaven Dance Competition” set for Oct. 4 at the Maverick Saloon &Dance Hall.
Businesses can opt for gold ($200), silver ($100) or bronze ($50) sponsorships or have business card ads in the program for $25. The deadline for sponsorship is Aug. 29.
Tickets to the October show are $20 each and include pizza, salad and a beverage.
