With just a little over a week left, the Light in the Dark Pumpkin Fest 2016 is ready to go and supporters have been putting finishing touches on Ian Deutch Memorial Park.
This festival, a fundraiser to purchase new lighting for the skate park, will be on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Ian Deutch Park from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The festival admission is free and there will be vendors, a beer garden, live music from local bands, and a few acts from Las Vegas. According to Mike Maye, one of the organizers of the event, the lineup will be finalized this week and listed on his website leading up to the event, www.ifimayeclothingco.com.
Maye said there will be music for everyone to enjoy.
“‘ICLV’, praise music from Las Vegas will be there,” he said. “There will also be a Christian rock band called Justified from Pahrump playing along with another local favorite, Tower of Cards. Then heading the event will be the Prescott Blues Band and finally, I will do a short set. All the groups were more than eager to come to Pahrump and help us with this project.”
Maye added there will be a lot of other events all day long and lots of food and drink. He is passionate about making his community a better one in which to live.
“As a child, riding my bike and playing drums were key in finding my passion,” he said. “In turn, helping these kids realize their goals is a project that is very close to my heart. Reaching this goal will be a positive example of how these kids can work together to achieve anything they set their minds to, and it’s been a long time coming. Local BMX riders, skateboarders and scooter riders have been fighting this fight for over five years.”
The fundraising for the event has been good.
“We have encountered strong support from the community at our car washes, and hope to build on that leading up to the event itself,” Maye said. “We have a car wash scheduled for the weekend at Java Junkies as a push into the event itself. We are in need of sponsors, any last-minute vendors and volunteers.”
Also, Maye has been selling clothing items and wristbands on his website.
One thing that Maye likes about this event is that it hasn’t been just him and few people working by themselves in the park to get ready for the event.
“We have had a lot of success with getting these kids involved in the project,” Maye said. “The skate park community has come together to get this done. Last weekend, we got together with about 25 volunteers and painted the park.”
The event is Oct. 29 at Ian Deutch Memorial Park from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Funds are being raised to install lights at the skate park located inside the park.
There will be a Halloween costume fashion show, three bounce houses, lots of kids’ activities, skate, scooter, BMX best trick competition, live music, DJ, talent show, soul train, line dance, square dance contest, beer pong tournament, best pumpkin carving contest, barbecue, and beer garden.
