Interim director for PAC choir

The Pahrump Arts Council recently lost the director of the local choir.

Andrew Barnum held the position for 10 years, since the inception of the performing singers over 10 years ago.

Although the choir took a summer break, members have begun rehearsals for the upcoming Christmas concert under the direction of Jean Eggert, who said she is looking for someone to replace her.

“I stepped up to do this because I didn’t want to see it disappear,” Eggert said. She has been singing with the choir for nine years and although she has no formal training, is “getting the hang of it.”

PAC put out a call for help filling the position over two months ago.

Eggert said, “No one would volunteer. So I’m doing what it takes to keep it going.”

“I don’t feel that qualified. I learned all that I know from watching Andy.”

She said one of the most difficult things for her is to single out an area which needs repetitive practice to get it right.

She said the group isn’t lacking in choices for music. “We’ve been collecting sheet music for as long as the choir has existed. We just add a couple of new songs, rehearse them and choose some favorites to round out the program.”

The Christmas Concert is scheduled for 7 p.m., Dec. 4. In the past PAC has experimented with free concerts to charging $3 admission.

Eggert said this year the group will ask for a good will donation and non-perishable items for one of the local food banks.
