The shows at Sanders Family Winery will continue and Kiwanis will use the venue to present “Comedy Under the Stars” on Sept. 21.
The event is a fundraiser for the organization and treasurer Diane Sprano said most of the money raised will go toward scholarships.
“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,” she said. “We want to raise enough money to fund four scholarships for seniors at our own high school.”
Sprano said Kiwanis would like to add a Friday night show to the fundraiser but need to sell out the Saturday show first. “We can’t make those plans quite yet, but hope we can.”
The event will feature a free wine tasting beginning at 6 p.m. Winery owner Jack Sanders said people should feel free to bring a picnic or snacks.
There will be door prizes and Sprano said the Kiwanis will raffle at least seven baskets. “We make themed baskets. Some are cheese and crackers, or chocolate or coffee baskets.” She said most of the baskets contain at least one bottle of wine.
There will also be a chance to win cash with the 50/50 raffle.
The comedians for the show are Auggie Smith and Ken Komoto.
Smith, at the age of 19, moved from Billings, Montana to Portland, Oregon to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. After a few years of toil and struggle, he first achieved acclaim by winning the 1994 Sam Adams Comedy Contest, whose prizes earned him his first national exposure on the television show Evening At the Improv.
His biography on the website auggiesmith.com states, “When Auggie takes the stage, audiences across the country quickly realize that they’re in for an evening of riveting, take-no-prisoners, stand-up comedy.
“Pop culture and political targets are dissected piece by piece into intelligently written manic rants. His seamless rapid-fire style has developed a loyal following across the country. He has spent most of the last two decades keeping a constant road schedule honing his craft and creating a truly memorable, relevant, and constantly evolving live experience.”
Ken Komoto made his television debut filming a program for A&E “Comedy On The Road with John Byner” in Waikiki, Hawaii.
Since 1990, Komoto has been keeping audiences rolling in the aisles. Most recently “Kentosan” has spent a five-year stand as a resort comedian for the Sheraton Princess and the Armed Forces resort in Waikiki.
There is nothing funnier than when Ken opens up on a brand of comedy that focuses on his upbringing and heritage. “Kentosan” is Japanese.
Tickets are $20 and are available from any Kiwanis member or by calling the winery at 727-1776.
