It’s an event tailor-made for local sewing enthusiasts.
Pahrump’s Bernina Sewing Center is now registering sewing aficionados for what’s known as Sewapalooza on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 9:30 a.m., to 4:30 p.m. in the Mountain Falls Banquet Room.
Owner Bill Gossage said the event is designed for beginners, experts and those who just want expand their skills.
“The Sewapalooza is really cool because it only costs $99 to sign up but they’re going to get a lot for their money which includes a goodie bag that is valued at over $300,” he said. “It’s quite a nice value for whatever you put into it and of course lunch is included.”
Sewapalooza will be led by Bernina educator Sandra Larson Swick.
Gossage said Swick’s expertise on sewing and teaching with Bernina sewing machines goes back more than 20 years.
“She is a master teacher in embroidery, garment construction, quilting, specialty projects and crafts,” he said. “Her Quilt in Space traveled to the International Space Station with astronaut Barbara Morgan. Sandra is quite skilled at her work and the workshop is designed for people who want to get into sewing.”
Gossage also said Sewapalooza goes beyond typical stitching fabric, as it serves as an opportunity for beginners and experts to learn about how computer technology has altered the world of sewing.
“It also involves embroidery, which requires a larger machine,” he said. “About 15 years ago or so computers got involved in sewing machines and the whole sewing world just exploded. The embroidery module on sewing machines have to work together where there is communication between the two.”
Additionally, Gossage said the art of sewing may not be for everyone.
“It’s a project that requires quite a bit of time and patience,” he said. “A lot of people don’t want to take the time because they want something ready-made. But you can also buy a pair of Levis and embellish it with an embroidery pattern where it will look like it came out of Macy’s, Dillard’s or another high-end retail store. A lot of people enjoy sewing make their own gifts and things that have embroidered patterns. They can personalize different items like bath towels and garment shirts.”

“We are really looking forward to it and they have a nice big room where there is plenty of room to have several sewing machines and it will be an all-day workshop,” Gossage said. “Lunch will also be included and plenty of snacks and door prizes to keep the ladies happy.”
