“Don’t become a victim,” is the message officials with the Retired Volunteer Senior Program (RSVP) want Pahrump’s senior community to live by.
The organization has scheduled its quarterly training session tomorrow focusing on the theme, “Are You Smarter Than a Scam Artist?”
The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension at 1651 E. Calvada Blvd., is the venue for the session scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Local RSVP Field Representative Jan Lindsey said tomorrow’s featured speaker is Lori Powers, outreach coordinator for Nevada Senior Medicare Patrol.
“She has been working to save money in the Medicare Trust Fund for over one year,” Lindsey said. “Lori started as a volunteer with the program, which educates Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers about health care fraud, errors, abuse and senior scams.”
Though the training session is designed mainly for volunteers and caregivers, Lindsey said other interested parties are encouraged to participate in the free training session.
“She will present, ‘Are You Smarter Than a Scam Artist’ and discuss how Medicare beneficiaries can protect themselves against health care fraud and avoid senior scams,” Lindsey said. “RSVP’s mission is to help the frail, homebound low-income seniors remain independent by providing high-quality programs which allow them to stay in their own homes with dignity.”
Powers was previously a human resources manager for a Fortune 500 steel manufacturer.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in general management from Purdue University and a Master of Arts in human resources from Webster University.
RSVP coordinates a volunteer network of seniors who use their own skills to provide support to community agencies and address community needs through services.
Tomorrow’s training session is also scheduled for broadcast to various locations throughout rural Nevada.
