Mankins has been in Pahrump since 1954, where he grew up farming and then working at the family business, Mankins Corner. The business was the local gas station, country store and cafe located at highways 160 and 372.

Mankins went to school at the original Manse School on Wilson Road and attended high school in Shoshone. He achieved a Bachelor of Science Degree from UNLV.

Roy went into the wholesale petroleum business upon graduation from UNLV becoming a distributor for Gulf Oil at the age of 25, the youngest in the company’s history.

After the dissolution of Gulf Oil, he moved to Laughlin, Nevada and was a founding partner in L &M Food Service, a multistate company that serviced the food and beverage industry. Roy sold his share of the partnership in the company to move home to Pahrump and started Mankins Insurance in 1984.
