Third annual USO show raises funds for VFW programs

The Veterans of Foreign War Post #10054 Ladies Auxiliary will host the third annual USO show at 7 p.m., Nov. 15, in the Saddle West showroom.

The theme of this year’s show is, “Stars and Stripes Variety USO Show.” Pre-sale tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the VFW, Chamber of Commerce, Pahrump Party Supply and Sunflower Fashions and will stop being sold on Nov. 14. After that, tickets can be purchased at the door for $20 on the night of the show. The show is put on each year to honor both active duty and retired veterans.

The Ladies Auxiliary, which consists of President Vi Morrissey, Conductress Nell Miller, Trustee Beverly Mitchell, President of District Five Erica Sehnert and members, Linda Wright and Angelica Garcia.

The group works together to put on the USO show each year. Wright is also the coordinator for the VFW food bank. Wright said, “I brought the entire committee together to start planning this year’s show.”

Wright explained that the planning began after last year’s show. “We started planning for this year right away. I booked the venue (Saddle West) right after last year’s show. I wanted to make sure I got that.”

The show is set to host 200 people with a goal to sell all the tickets. All proceeds will go to support the VFW food bank.

“We threw out ideas among ourselves. We had an idea based on last year’s show of what we wanted to do for this year’s show,” Sehnert stated.

The original idea for the USO show was planted by local attorney Sharon Cahlen and Wright said, “We just continued to grow it.” To date, Wright reported having sold only 10 tickets.

This year a mystery auction is scheduled along with other door prizes. Among those slated for entertainment will be the Nevada Silver Tappers. The Nye County Starlets will perform the closing ceremony. Remmington Nicosia will sing the National Anthem and the Pahrump Valley High School Color Guard will present the flag. Dan Schinhofen will provide all the music which will entail a variety of hits throughout the years. Linda DeMeo will emcee the event.

Wright mentioned that members of the Pahrump Valley High School Key Club also got involved and helped to bring the entire show together, working on decorations and any backstage work.

The food bank helps veterans throughout the year with non-perishable items and toiletries. It is open to any veteran who is in need. Veterans can get assistance by showing their VA card at the food bank. The food bank is open three days per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and accepts donations of non-perishable items as well as monetary donations. The hours for the food bank are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
