The VFW Auxiliary of the Clyde E. Newman Post 10054 is sponsoring an opportunity for the community to show their support for their county and for their veterans.
Fran Wilcox, vice president of the VFW Auxiliary Post and the co-chairperson for the Americanism and Patriotic Instructor Committee, teaches kids and people in general on how to respect the flag and everything about flag etiquette.
“We are asking everyone to check the condition of their flags before they fly them,” Wilcox said. “If your flag has become dirty or tattered it’s time to replace it. We are sponsoring a flag exchange. I am speaking out because we won’t be able to have a flag exchange unless people know about it. And the message isn’t out there.”
She said the VFW has done this for years.
“We don’t want dirty and tattered flags flying in town for it’s disrespectful,” Wilcox said.
The hope is that by Veterans Day on Nov. 11, there will be many beautiful American flags flying. The flags were purchased by the VFW.
“We paid for the flags by having a fundraiser and some were donated,” Wilcox said. “Flags were bought from GI USA in Pahrump and they donated some of the flags.”
The VFW post is located at 4651 Homestead Road and the dates for the exchange are Oct. 21, 26, and 28, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The flag exchange is for residents only and not businesses and they do this at no charge but they do accept donations.
The VFW said that old flags should not be thrown in the trash. They said there will be ceremonies to burn the flags properly that the public is welcome to attend and the date will be announced.
