In many towns across the country, it is easy to recognize when a town is proud of their high school, for you will see the high school mascot emblazoned on a billboard or water tower or even a grain silo.
“It shows school spirit and tells people how proud we are of our high school and our athletes,” Trojans booster club president Cindy Colucci said.
According to Trojans Athletic Director Larry Goins, Pahrump has the opportunity to do the same thing.
Goins said this was a project that Trojans booster president Cindy Colucci had conceived and it was brought to his attention by Trojans football coach Joe Clayton.
The idea would be to put a huge Trojans sign on a water tank owned by Tim Hafen’s water company, Pahrump Utility Company Inc. on the south side of town on the hillside across from Manse Road on the left side of Highway 160 as you leave town.
Colucci said she has been wanting to do this for some time now.
“I came up with the idea sometime in 2008,” she said. “At first, I thought of putting Trojans on the hill somewhere coming into town in white letters. The original idea was getting tires donated by Big O Tire and we would paint them white. Part of the problem with that though was the hill was too far from the highway.”
She came up with the water tank one day driving into town and then asked Tim Hafen about it.
“He said he would have to go before the water board of the company to ask them,” Colucci said. “He later came back to me and said that the board had voted unanimously to let us put Trojans on the tank.”
Goins said now that they’ve gotten the approval to put the logo on the tank, it’s just a matter of coming up with the funds.
“We are looking at $5,000 and I would like to raise all that money through donations,” Goins said. “We can use some booster funds but only if we fall a little short.”
He said the students are voting on the wording.
“The tank will be wrapped,” he said. “Which is a term that sign companies use.”
The process is like doing a modern-day billboard. Billboards are not painted anymore, they are wrapped. The wording will be something like, ‘Home of the Trojans’ or ‘Once a Trojan always a Trojan.’”
If the donations don’t roll in he said they might resort to fundraisers. The goal is to have the signage up by the fall season.
