It’s a full Saturday. Those wanting to do it all should break out the running shoes.
The Pahrump Arts Council will present a free classical guitar concert from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday in the large conference room of the Pahrump Community Library.
PAC member Joyce Higginbotham said PAC was fortunate in having classical guitarist and teacher David Grimes offer to give this concert.
Another PAC member, Marilyn Dorn, is responsible for having arranged the first concert in 2011. Grimes, her longtime friend, came for a visit and offered to give a concert for Pahrump. This will be the third year in a row he has appeared at the library.
Grimes’ associate, Dr. Gregory Newton will also be available. Since the two often perform together, Pahrump will again be privileged to have both in concert.
Grimes and Newton have performed around the world. They are composers and recording artists as well. Grimes is a highly-respected teacher and coach and has served as Director of Guitar Studies at California State University, Fullerton where he developed one of the nation’s leading centers for guitar instruction.
His own compositions are being performed by prominent guitarists all over the world.
Newton completed his doctorate at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2007 and his specialty is music from North America, Asia and Africa and he frequently gives concerts devoted to those genres.
He is an active composer and arranger and has several recordings to his credit.
Although the concert admission is free, Higginbotham said donations will be accepted.
There will be a short intermission where refreshments will be served.
Another genre of music will be featured Saturday as well. Stan Rankin, musician and owner of Caribbean Lifestyles, will perform as Off 160 Coffee House hosts another Reggae Fest beginning at 5 p.m. Oct. 26. The coffee house is located in Beverly Plaza, 1330 S. Highway 160.
The parking lot will be alive with people dancing and enjoying music and food.
This is also the weekend for Beatty Days. The story on B3 will outline the festivities which begin today and end at 3 p.m. Sunday with the award presentations for the Dutch Oven cook-off. There is a sanctioned chili cook-off set for Saturday. Those wanting to compete need to become registered members of the International Chili Society. The winner will have a chance to compete for $25,000 in the national championships.
Tecopa Hot Springs Resort will host the Southern Inyo Fire Protection District annual bazaar and fundraiser beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. The event will last well into the evening and after dark, there will be a performance by fire dance troupe Pyro Saga. Live music will be onstage throughout the day with Pablo Tecopa and the Dusty Butter Band topping the evening.
Raffles, auctions of some stellar items and travel packages, outdoor adventure packages along with other festivities will raise money to keep the firefighters and EMTs available to the public throughout the year.
Saturday is also slated for a fundraiser dinner at the Maverick to benefit the family of Lanae Leavitt who passed away Sept. 27.
She left two young children behind and the family is attempting to cover Leavitt’s cremation expenses.
Dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be an auction, raffles and live music from Acoma Chyne. Dinner is $20 per plate.
The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners have set up a self-guided garden tour for Sunday. The event is $3 and maps to the herb and vegetable gardens on the tour will be available at the extension office and the Farmer’s Market at Petrack Park. The event begins at 10 a.m. and touring ends at 2 p.m.
