Sanders Family Winery hosts Saturday concert performance

The Sanders Family Winery’s summer concert series continues on Saturday with a Johnny Cash tribute show, starring Jimmy Ray and Cyndi Cantrell.

Gates open at 6 p.m.

The duo, from Las Vegas, will play hits spanning Cash’s long career.

Winery owner Jack Sanders said the Cantrells have played his venue more than a half-dozen times.

“They always perform on Memorial Day for us because they do a nice tribute to veterans,” he said. “They are literally out of Las Vegas now but they play all over. Folks can also bring their own food and snacks if they choose, because that is standard with Sanders concerts. Enjoy your food, drink our wine, and have a great time. Of course, we always have our free wine tastings.”

Sanders said Johnny Cash made music for the common man, which is exactly what attendees will experience at the one-night-only performance under the stars at the winery.

“Johnny Cash and June Carter are legends in the music industry and this Saturday, the legend is recreated and celebrated with Jimmy and Cyndi Cantrell as Johnny and June,” he said. “I think we have maybe 20 seats left, so tickets are going quite fast.”

Along with their backup band “Black Train,” Sanders said the audience can expect to hear their favorite Johnny Cash hits under the stars.

“They will play tribute to Johnny and June with songs that include Folsom Prison Blues, A Boy Named Sue, Ring of Fire, One Piece at a Time and many more classic hits,” he said. “This tribute band delivers an energetic and entertaining show for all to enjoy.”

Sanders looked ahead to next month’s performances with a bevy of talented performers, including Heidi Thompson and legendary comedian Murray Langston as the “Unknown Comic.”

“Heidi does Cher for us and when she’s out here, she sells out,” he said. “She’s changing her format. She’s an impressionist and she does Cher, Carol Burnett, and a lot of different characters. She told me it’s going to be a lot like the old Carol Burnett Show on steroids. She is dynamite.”

The “Unknown Comic” is the stage name used by actor and stand-up comic Murray Langston, who is best known for his comic performances on The Gong Show, where he performed with a brown paper bag over his head.

Among Langston’s credits are The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, motion picture Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and The Unknown Comedy Show.

“Heidi and she is going to open the show and next week we have her coming back, so we’ll have three in a row,” Sanders said. “We are going on hiatus for one week and from then on, it will be every other week.”

Tickets for the performance are now on sale for $20 and can be purchased at Sanders Winery, located at 3780 E. Kellogg Road.
