Two members of the Nye County Sheriff’s Auxiliary Unit (SAU) were recognized for their service this month.
Skeet Smith, and Frank Heyer were honored for their respective 10 years of voluntary service to the Nye County Sheriff’s Office at the auxiliary’s recent monthly meeting.
“These individuals have given up their time for the past 10 years to serve the community without pay in order to free up regular sheriff’s deputies to do the job they were hired to do, which is to protect and serve,” said SAU Chaplain Drake Austin.
Additionally, Austin said the auxiliary is now looking for qualified individuals, male or female, to serve as auxiliary officers in the community.
“Volunteers are requested to serve a minimum of 15 hours per month and are armed with batons, pepper spray and carry a radio to call a deputy, if required,” Austin said. “It should also be noted that volunteers are never placed in life threatening positions.”
Members of the auxiliary are sworn officers, providing assistance to the sheriff’s office, as needed.
Aside from regulating traffic control at accident and fire scenes, auxiliary officers commonly serve summons and subpoenas, conduct drug testing for the court and assist deputies at the Nye County Detention Center, along with a wide range of other services.
Austin noted that the 26-member auxiliary unit was started years ago by former Sheriff Wade Lieseke, Jr., under the moniker of the Community Action Team (CAT).
