AmeriCorps officials schedule town cleanup for Saturday

Beth Halberstam from the AmeriCorps local chapter is looking for area residents who want to make a difference.

On Saturday, AmeriCorps officials, along with volunteers, will take to the streets of Pahrump for the Pahrump Town Cleanup as part of the nationally-recognized, “Make a Difference Day.”

The event is coordinated through NyE Communities Coalition.

“This is a nationwide event where volunteers get together to kind of make a difference to their respective communities,” Halberstam said. “This started in 1992 and the focus is on everybody just coordinating together to demonstrate that we are all united to make a difference in everybody’s life.”

Halberstam, who said the event is also taking place in Las Vegas, noted that Pahrump’s event drew assistance from afar, as educational and health care officials from Amargosa Valley and Tonopah are expected to lend a hand on Saturday morning in different areas around the community.

Halberstam said she would like people to meet Saturday at Petrack Park at 8:45 a.m.

“Once everything is organized, we are going to break out into groups and cover the area near the library and Chief Tecopa Cemetery,” she said. “We’re also going behind Home Depot to clean up that area.”

Volunteers need not worry about bringing their own supplies, as the AmeriCorps agency will provide the items.

“We will supply water, trash bags and gloves,” she said. “For people who have problems bending over, we will have mechanical grabbers to pick up the trash. All people have to do is just show up. We will gladly accept anyone who is interested in participating with this town cleanup.”

Halberstam also said if parents choose to bring their children, supervision is a must.

“We are inviting everyone to participate. If parents decide to bring their kids, we always recommend that they are supervised by an adult due to safety reasons.

“In total, there’s six different areas, and again, the meeting point is at Petrack Park,” she said. “From there, we will inquire if anyone needs a ride to the different areas, and each area will have AmeriCorps members as a go-to person if anyone has any questions.”

Petrack Park is located at 150 N. Highway 160, adjacent to the Bob Ruud Community Center. For additional information, call 775 727-9970 ext. 233.
