Numerous fires throughout the valley made for a busy weekend for members of Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue.
Chief Scott Lewis said fire crews were summoned to the area of Calvada Boulevard and Highway 160 last Tuesday for a report of a vehicle fire just after 11 a.m.
“Upon arrival, crews found a work pickup truck on the shoulder of the road,” he said. “The vehicle was well-involved. There were no immediate exposures and crews quickly extinguished that fire without incident. There were no injuries.”
Later that evening, first responders were dispatched to the area of Charleston Park Avenue and Woodchips Road after dispatchers received reports of a motor vehicle collision involving an animal just after 9 p.m.
“Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle versus a horse collision,” Lewis said. “The horse had been removed from the scene prior to our arrival. Fire crews assessed and transported one person from the scene to the local hospital.”
The following day, Lewis said fire crews were summoned to the 1100 block of East Calvary Street for a report of an oven fire at a one-story residence.
“Upon arrival, crews found a dwelling with light smoke conditions within,” he said. “It was a one-story single-family dwelling. Further investigation revealed that the oven fire was precipitated by a malfunction of that oven. The appliance was secured, and the house was ventilated. There were no injuries.”
Pahrump medics returning from an inter-agency transport in Las Vegas discovered a two-vehicle collision on Highway 160 at mile marker 19 in Clark County just before 8 p.m.
“Medic 5 came up on a two-vehicle t-bone-type collision with one entrapment,” Lewis said. “They requested Clark County as well as a rescue engine from Pahrump as a result of the entrapment. The medic crew managed the incident with Clark County resources. The rescue engine was ultimately canceled and turned around back to Pahrump.”
Later that evening, fire crews were dispatched to the 1600 block of West Dan Way for a structure fire at 9:45 p.m.
Lewis said a malfunctioning appliance was the cause.
“Crews found a one-story manufactured dwelling with nothing showing, upon arrival,” he said. “However, they found the fire had occurred in the HVAC system. Fire crews secured that appliance and checked for extensions. Having found none, the crews cleared the scene. There were no injuries reported.”
On Friday, fire crews responded to the area of Blosser Ranch Road and Lola Lane for a report of a brush fire in that area just after 4:30 a.m.
“Upon arrival, crews found a mesquite grove fire along with improperly discarded rubbish in the area that consisted of tires,” he said. “There was no structure-type exposures, but crews contended with high winds that were in excess of 25-to-30 miles per hour. They made great progress in short order and controlled the fire within about 40 minutes after arrival. The fire was thought to be suspect in nature and is under investigation.”
Just one minute later, fire crews were dispatched to the area of Harris Farm Road and Lola Lane for a report of another brush fire.
“Crews found an area alongside the roadway consisting of trees and deep duff, which is the accumulation of pine needles and leaves that accumulated on the floor for a long period of time,” Lewis said. “It gets really thick and crews held that fire to the immediate area. There was no immediate structure exposures, and again, crews were faced with very high wind conditions.”
On Friday, one person was transported to Desert View Hospital following a report of a motor vehicle collision with injuries at Highway 160 and 372 just after 1 p.m.
“Upon arrival, crews found a motorcycle accident and that patient was transported to the local hospital,” Lewis said. “It is unknown whether another vehicle was involved. We believe it was just the motorcyclist.”
On Saturday, fire crews responded to Nevada Treasure RV Resort after receiving reports of a possible gas leak in the area at 9:34 a.m.
“Upon arrival, crews found that it was an odor discharge and not an actual gas leak,” Lewis said. “Crews then secured the facility pending the arrival of the propane provider.”
Hours later, medics were dispatched to the parking lot of Walmart for a pedestrian versus motor vehicle collision just before 1 p.m.
“It was associated with a domestic battery call for the sheriff’s office, which may have contributed to the accident,” Lewis said. “Crews assessed one patient, who declined to be transported to the local hospital.”
At 2:20 p.m. on Saturday, fire crews were summoned to the area of South Linda Street for a reported brush fire.
“Crews found a brush fire running close to a propane facility,” Lewis said. “They made short order of the suppression and there were no extensions to any of the dwellings or other nearby exposures. No injuries were reported.”
At least one person was transported to Desert View Hospital Saturday evening following a single-vehicle crash in the area of Dandelion Street and Park Ridge Avenue at 8:30 p.m.
“Upon arrival, crews found that the patient was up and walking around the scene,” Lewis said. “That patient was subsequently transported to Desert View Hospital for observation.”
On Sunday afternoon, fire crews were dispatched for a dumpster fire at the Lakeside RV Park at Homestead Road and Thousandaire Boulevard.
“Upon arrival, crews found dumpster fire that had some nearby tree exposures,” Lewis said. “Crews made short order of the suppression and there was no extension or injuries reported.”
Later that evening, fire crews responded to the area of Harris Farm Road just west of Lola Lane following reports of a brush fire just before 7:30 p.m.
“Upon arrival, crews found a brush fire running alongside the roadway in the salt cedar grove in that area,” Lewis said. “The investigation revealed that there was possibly an accelerant used to ignite that fire. An investigation is underway between Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Services along with the Nye County Sheriff’s Office. That fire is thought to be suspect in nature. There were no injuries reported.”
