Candidates spend $57,778 in county commission races

Thirteen candidates seeking the three seats in Nye County’s commission races spent a combined $57,778, according to the campaign finance reports filed with the state last week.

The contentious District III race saw the bulk of the spending with a total of $28,366 spent between the five candidates.

Incumbent Donna Cox spent $17,322 between Jan. 1 and June 9, the largest amount of all candidates, according to Contributions and Expense Reports filed with the Nevada Secretary of State.

Donna Cox, Leo Blundo, Antheny Dodd and Greg Dann also raised a total $28,990.

In District II, where a vacant seat was left by incumbent commissioner Frank Carbone, the five candidates spent $9,931. Front-runner John Koenig listed $9,650 in contributions and $8,714 in expenses through June 9.

In District I, the three candidates spent $18,480 throughout the race.

Incumbent commissioner Lorinda Wichman reported $11,100 in contributions, more than her nearest opponent Scott Mattox, who raised $9,700. Wichman and Mattox reported $8,426 and $9,855 in expenses, respectively.

Incumbent District 36 State Assemblyman James Oscarson meanwhile, raised additional an $25,050 from May 20 through June 9, bringing his total to $159,484. Oscarson reported $129,506 in expenses.

His main challenger, anti-tax proponent Tina Trenner, reported a total $10,650 in cash on hand. She spent $8,797, according to her report.

Rusty Stanberry, another Nevada Assembly District 36 hopeful reported $800 in contributions and $1,080 in expenses.

Oscarson is one of many incumbent Republican lawmakers in Nevada receiving in-party challenges for supporting a $1.5 billion package of new and old taxes during the last session.
