College reps, food part of parent conferences at high school Wednesday

Stores have big sales to draw in people. Pahrump Valley High School may not have that kind of draw, but there are other ways to get parents to come to parent conferences tonight from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“We try to have a lot going on to attract more parents to come,” principal Chris Brockman said. “We will have the ROTC from UNLV and there will be nine colleges there to answer questions and a chili dinner too. So a lot of info will be given out, in addition to being a chance to speak to your student’s teachers.”

The school will also count on parents being hungry around their conference. Why go to McDonald’s when you can eat chili at the high school, courtesy of the high school culinary department and the art club.

The chili dinner is limited to first-come, first-serve and they are asking $10 for tickets. All works in the exhibit are inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.

“We have not sold out tickets yet,” art teacher Crystal Dabrowski said. “The dinner will benefit the art club. The art club is exhibiting in the library Vincent Van Gogh.”

The following colleges will also be attending the school conferences: University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Southern Utah University, Dixie State, Nevada State College, College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada at Reno, University of Nevada at Las Vegas and Sierra Nevada College.Parent/teacher conferences are being held today for grades 9-12 at the high school from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., and at Rosemary Clarke Middle School from noon-2 p.m. and from 4 p.m.to 6 p.m. The middle school will have a book sale and a food fundraiser, selling hot dogs, popcorn and other items.

Elementary schools will have their conferences on Thursday.
