COPS: Man arrested smuggling computer in his pants
One man was arrested this week after he allegedly placed a computer in his pants and walked out of a local computer store without paying for it.
According to a declaration of arrest in the case, on Wednesday at approximately 11:30 a.m. a Nye County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to Great Deal Computers, located at 1190 State Route 372, for a report of theft.
The owner told police that several days earlier on Feb. 7, he noticed a black Dell computer, worth approximately $999, was missing from the showroom floor.
Upon reviewing the store’s surveillance footage, the owner told the deputy he witnessed a heavier set male with tattoos and two children with him take the computer off a shelf and place it down his pants before walking out of the store without paying.
Less than an hour after taking a report of the incident, the same deputy was called back to the store after police dispatch received a report that a person matching the suspect’s description was in the store again.
The officer subsequently made contact with a man named Kyle Shelton at the computer store.
When asked if he had taken the Dell computer, the man allegedly admitted he “needed money for diapers.”
According to a police report, when officers searched Shelton’s car with his permission, they also allegedly found methamphetamine, two morphine sulfate pills and two oxycodone pills in his possession as well.
Shelton was placed under arrest for burglary, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and transported to the Nye County Detention Center to be booked into custody.
COPS: Inmates fight over clogged jailhouse toilet
Two inmates at the Nye County Detention Center are being held on additional charges of battery by a prisoner after they allegedly got into a fight last week over what one inmate said was a clogged toilet at the facility.
On Saturday around 2 p.m. a detention deputy reported hearing loud yelling coming from C-pod in the jail. When he went to investigate, the officer discovered two inmates, Robert Wilkin and Matthew Hyatt, being restrained by other inmates.
The deputy spoke with Hyatt who allegedly told him he told Wilkin “to just walk away” and that Wilkin hit him first.
After another deputy had removed Wilkin from the area and placed him in another housing unit, Wilkin allegedly told officers Hyatt was the one who had started the fight and that the quarrel began over a clogged toilet in C-pod.
Upon reviewing video surveillance of the housing unit where the alleged fight occurred, a deputy reported seeing Hyatt push Wilkin twice before Wilkin got into a “fighting stance” and hit Hyatt, at which time they both allegedly engaged in mutual combat, hitting one another with closed fists.
Deputies collected written statements from the two inmates who both allegedly admitted to the fight, but claimed the other person was the one who started it.
