Death Valley holding annual art contest

If you get the artistic bug this summer put that urge to good use, as Death Valley National Park is hosting a summer art contest.

Death Valley welcomes artists and photographers to participate in the art contest for the Hike Death Valley program.

The two categories of artwork included in the contest are a decal design and a promotional poster design.

Interested contest entrants can share their entries by using #HikeDeathValleyArt via park social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, and by emailing deva_information@nps.gov with the subject line #HikeDeathValleyArt.

Winning artwork will be featured on the decal and promotional poster for the Hike Death Valley program in addition to prizes being awarded to the winners.

First-place winners will receive an interagency annual pass that covers admission to national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests and other federal recreation areas for one year.

Second place winners will get a $50 gift certificate for Death Valley Natural History Association bookstores. Prizes are compliments of Death Valley Natural History Association.

The deadline for submissions is July 31 and contest details are available at nps.gov.deva.

The Hike Death Valley program urges park visitors to get out on the trails by earning points for each featured hike completed.

After earning four points, visitors are eligible to receive a free commemorative decal by sharing their photos with a park ranger and learning how to share their experience online.

Depending on difficulty of the trail one hikes, participants can earn one point, two points or four points per trail.

A different group of hikes and a new version of the collectable decal are featured each year.
