The driver of a late-model Ford Mustang led Nevada Highway Patrol and Nye County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed pursuit around the valley just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, before the chase ended in California. Speeds exceeded 90-to-100-plus mph during the chase through town.
According to a press release, Nye County’s assistance was requested by NHP to help apprehend the driver of the fleeing vehicle, which was headed southbound on Homestead Road to the dry lake bed and back up Homestead, where the driver turned northbound on Highway 160 through a construction zone.
The release stated sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit and took over the primary position after the NHP cruiser experienced mechanical failure. Efforts to stop the vehicle using spike strips were unsuccessful.
The driver then turned westbound on Highway 372 toward California, in an attempt to put some distance between him and the pursuing deputies.
“The vehicle’s behavior endangered the public, along with construction personnel working on the highway improvement project,” the release said. “Sheriff’s deputies continued the pursuit into California when the assistance of California Highway Patrol and Inyo County Sheriff’s Office were requested.”
The pursuit concluded in Baker, California where the two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody by CHP, along with additional California agencies.
The release also stated that during the pursuit by Nevada Highway Patrol, both occupants operated the vehicle during the chase.
Charges are being filed against the occupants by the Nye County Sheriff’s Office for the felonious driving behavior which occurred in Nye County and were witnessed by sheriff’s deputies.
The names of the two individuals and why NHP attempted to stop the vehicle have yet to be released. Efforts to get comments from California law enforcement were unsuccessful by press time.
