As part of National Police Week, Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly her staff invites everyone to join them in remembering Nye County’s fallen law enforcement officers.
The “Fallen Officer Candlelight Ceremony” is planned for 7 p.m. today at the Ian Deutch Government Complex, 1520 E. Basin Road in Pahrump, the sheriff’s office said in an announcement earlier this week.
The eight Nye County law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty through the years are deputies Ian Deutch, Gary Raymond Downs, William Maroon, Harry Mannon, Undersheriff John Maslach, Sheriff George Berra, Sheriff Thomas Logan and Deputy Constable Richard P. Ryan, the sheriff’s office said.
The keynote speaker is set to be Randy Sutton, a 33-year law enforcement veteran, with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, retiring at the rank of lieutenant after 23 years.
National Police Week runs through Friday. It dates back to 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.
