Two roundabouts coming to a pair of intersections on Highway 372 will take a little bit longer than expected to complete.
The Nevada Department of Transportation set an approximate delay 30 days for survey time before construction could begin on the project.
“The department needed additional time to properly survey the corridor, making certain that the connecting surface streets and driveways properly aligned throughout the one-mile-long stretch of State Route 372 for fully-flush driving surfaces,” said Tony Illia, NDOT spokesperson.
The delay went into effect on Oct. 3 and the areas in question have since attained accurate road depths and elevations for all of the driveways and side streets along the corridor, according to NDOT.
With the issues flattened out, Illia explained that construction is set to be underway in the coming days.
“The contractor will begin milling work at the intersections of Pahrump Valley Boulevard and Blagg Road on Nov.9, with additional construction to follow next week,” he said.
The $4.05 million project will create sections of new curb, gutters and sidewalks, as well as new handicap-accessible pedestrian crossings in each direction.
The concrete roundabouts will feature desert median landscaping with tri-colored crushed rock arranged in a graphic pattern. Additionally, concrete walls, boulders, Joshua trees, agave cactuses, and shrubs will adorn the pair of roundabouts.
Cor-Ten steel art sculptures of wild horses, bighorn sheep and birds will add an area-specific touch to the landscaping of the roundabout medians.
New street lighting, signage, and stretches of asphalt and concrete paving with a friction finishing course on nine valley gutters where certain streets intersect with SR-372 that will help vehicle tires grip the road in order to prevent skidding are also in the plans.
The project is slated to last six months and will entail a sophisticated traffic plan with flaggers, occasional nighttime work and phased construction while maintaining continual access for emergency first responders. The pair of roundabouts are anticipated to be completed by late May 2017.
