A Veterans Service Officer will be located at the Pahrump County Veterans Services Office, located at 1981 E. Calvada, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The office is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch.

Pre-scheduled appointments are suggested although walk-ins are welcome but can only be seen as time permits.

Vets are advised to bring a copy of their DD-214 discharge document and/or current VA paperwork. If the claim involves dependents, veterans should bring marriage and/or birth certificates as well as social security numbers of their dependents.

Women’s self-defense

The women’s-self defense classes begin its sixth year with Homeland Heroes Inc. sponsorship and the Nye County Sheriff’s Office, which began in March of 2007, after a rape and two attacks took place in Pahrump.

Women and girls’ class teach them what to do for themselves at no charge .

Learn how to be aware of your surroundings and to learn how to utilize your mind and body in defending yourself.

Classes are held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Ages for participation are 14 – 18 yrs (with parental consent), up to 99 years old.

The remaining class schedule for 2013 is:

June 29 and June 30, July 20 and 21, August 17 and 18.

Calvary Kids’ Club

Calvary Chapel Church, located at 1051 Mickey St., has started a kid’s club for children age 6 to 12 years old on Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., running until August 15th.

Lessons will come from the Book of Daniel, plus there will be crafts, memory verse, worship, snacks, games and prizes.

Free computer classes

New Hope Fellowship Church, located at 781 West Street will be holding free computer classes. The classes will be held in the back building from 5:20 to 8 p.m.

The dates of the classes are:

July 2 – Beginning class (typing, mouse, internet, email);

July 9 and 16 – Beginning MS Word (word processing);

July 23 and 30 – Beginning MS Excel (spreadsheet);

August 6 and 13 – Beginning MS Publisher (graphics program).

Driver safety class

An AARP Driver Safety Program class is scheduled to be held on June 27, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Pahrump Community Library.

Participants should register by calling Matthew Swift at 513-7306.

Payment should be made by check or money order made payable to the AARP. The charge is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. ( Be sure to bring your ID card).

Sunday Sing

The 5th Sunday Sing will be held at 5 p.m., June 30 at Heritage Bible Church, located at 3061 E. Heritage Dr., at Homestead Rd.

Free swim day on July 4th

The Pahrump Valley Cruisers car club is sponsoring a free swim day at the Pahrump Community Pool on July 4th for families.

The pool is open at noon and stays open to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 p.m. on Friday and until 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Free legal clinic

A free legal clinic for Pahrump residents will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., on July 9 at Stovall & Associates located at 3250 Highway 160, Ste. 6.

Anyone wishing help with completing court forms, foreclosure issues or any other legal problem can make an appointment by calling 866-432-0404, extension 140, or by arriving at the clinic on the day and time of event.

VBS at The Way

The Way Baptist Fellowship, located at 1620 Charleston Park, will be holding Vacation Bible School July 15 to July 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, for children aged 4 to the 6th grade.

Pumpkin contest

Pumpkins are a 90 to 120-day crop. Plant them now to be ready for the Fall Festival’s annual Giant Pumpkin Contest and show off your pumpkin growing skills.

Trench Rats meet

The National Order of Trench Rats (Dugout 615) meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m., at Wulfy’s RV Park clubhouse.

Any DAV (Disabled American Veteran) member is invited to join their group; they are veterans helping veterans.
