IN PROFILE: Sharon Mayfield

BUSINESS: Master at Arms- firearms sales

AGE: 62

BACKGROUND: “My husband got me into shooting in 1981. I got started when I met him. I took a gun in for repair and he was the only gunsmith open on a Saturday in California. I was a certified to instruct CCW (carrying concealed weapon) classes in California. I now teach children and adults how to shoot.”

FIRST JOB: “I was a waitress and then worked for Fresno County for 10 years.”

YEARS IN BUSINESS: “I have been in the gun industry for 32 years. My husband does repairs and is semiretired. We had our own gun store in California, but closed it in October of 2013 and now both of us work for Master at Arms.”

PERSONAL: “I shoot for fun. I like to do this once or twice a week. I prefer to shoot handguns like my Sig Sauer 1911 .45, but I also enjoy shooting my AK-47, my AR-15 and the M-1 Garand. I enjoy shooting the old military rifles. I may not have a pink Sig Sauer but I do have a turquoise AR.”

BUSINESS CLIMATE: “It’s a lot more open here than California. Unfortunately we are going through hard times because of all the laws we are passing and the political climate we have. We are doing OK, but I can remember when it was a lot better. President Clinton and Obama are our best sales people. The two of them cause people to buy a lot of guns.”
