There are nearly $42 million in state road projects planned in Nye County within the next year, according to a recent report released by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Fiscal year 2016 looks to be a busy one for NDOT with 19 road projects in the county.
“We’re actually expecting to do quite a bit of work in Nye County in fiscal year ‘16,” said Sandra Rosenberg, assistant director in charge of planning for NDOT. “Around $41 million, so I think that is pretty significant for this county.”
Everything in the work program is tentative, as things come up to push back start and completion dates.
“This is what we plan on doing,” Rosenberg said. There is always possibilities of delays, but we’ll certainly let you know.”
Two of those projects will be a pair of roundabouts that will be constructed on portions of Highway 372, which includes the busy intersection at Highway 160, at a cost of $3 million.
The project is scheduled to go to bid in December and begin construction in spring 2016, with completion slated for fall 2016.
NDOT will hold public information meetings, provided the regional planning commission with a video and is studying the feasibility of a television campaign in the area to educate residents on roundabouts.
The biggest project slated for 2016 is an around $22 million upgrade to a 12-mile stretch of Highway 160, designed to increase safety on that section of road.
Adding right turn pocket and slope flattening on Highway 160, which are big safety concerns, from north of Basin Road to north of Bella Vista Road are the key features to that project. That includes some improvements of Johnnie’s Curve.
The project is part of the National Highway Performance Program, which provides support for the condition and performance of the National Highway System, for the construction of new facilities on the NHS, and to ensure that investments of federal-aid funds in highway construction are directed to support progress toward the achievement of performance targets established in a state’s asset management plan for the NHS, according its website.
Additionally, there are a seven other million-dollar plus projects, which add up to over $16 million, accounting for a little over a third of the budget.
A $4.2 million project will widen Highway 160 from Rainbow Avenue to Calvada Boulevard from two lanes to four lanes.
Other projects include a $4 million one featuring work on U.S. Route 6, and a $2.7 million undertaking on state Route 138.
