The Nevada Department of Transportation plans to spend more than $9 million on projects in Nye County in the 2018 fiscal year with Nye County recently accepting its annual work program.
Among those projects are:
■ Shoulder widening and slope flattening on U.S. Highway 95 that will cost an estimated $9 million
■ Sealing on Nevada Highway 160, $398,000
■ Installation of turn lanes at the Sunnyside rest area, $250,000
■ Sealing on Nevada Highway 361, $110,000
■ Sealing in Amargosa Valley and Beatty on U.S. Highway 95, $50,000 each
■ Sealing in Beatty on Nevada Highway 373, $8,000
Among the current projects that will be completed in 2017 are:
■ Sealing on Nevada Highway 376 in Round Mountain that will be completed by June 30
■ Work on the Johnnie Curve that is estimated to be completed in September
■ Turn lanes, acceleration lanes, mill and overlay north of East Basin Road in Pahrump
Nye County commissioners also provided the department with its top two concerns, as they plan to bring them back next year, that were identified by NDOT in Nye County as Highway 160 at Oxbow Avenue and Wilson Road and Highway 160 southbound at Nevada Highway 372.
Two other top concerns were Highway 160 between Postal Road and Commercial Road and Nevada Highway 372 at Barney Road in Pahrump.
Other concerns
Over the past year, NDOT identified issues in all rural Nevada counties. Among them were passing lanes, wild horses, intersections and shoulder widening.
“Specifically, what’s been coming to light the last couple of years is wildlife-vehicle collisions. So we are actually working on a statewide study right now to look at how to prioritize those corridors,” said Sondra Rosenberg, assistant director of planning at NDOT.
Statewide, NDOT recorded 5,100 vehicle collisions with wildlife in the last 10 years and 13 fatalities.
The comprehensive report on wildlife collisions will be ready in the next six months.
NDOT is updating its statewide long-range plan, called the One Nevada Plan.
The 2018 fiscal year starts July 1, 2017.
